The Goonies, Hot Rods and Hamburgers, Alewife Cove Flotilla

This Week in New London, July 1-7

When it comes to early July in New London, the dominant factor in the events on the New London Patch calendar and New London Main Street events page is a hope for weather nice enough to get you outside.

The regular Field of Greens farmers markets continue in three venues: from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday at Parade Plaza, and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at Hodges Square. The Elks Lodge holds a cookout and cruise night on Thursday, bringing in hot rods and hamburgers from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; the rain date is Friday. And the Old Town Mill open houses offer tours of the historic site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Wednesdays tend to be good for a movie night. The Public Library of New London's new "Groundbreaking Films For Grown-Ups" series brings in The Da Vinci Code at 5 p.m. tonight. Hygienic Art’s outdoor “Summer Flickers” series shows The Goonies tonight at 8 p.m.

Hygienic Art hosts an art opening for the artist collaborative “Passion Discipline Intuition Intellect,” with a reception starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Ongoing exhibits include Daniela Campins at Expressiones, Matthew Cassar at Spirit Gallery, and Aleksandr Trachishin at Studio 33

For children’s activities, the Garde Arts Center and Missoula Children’s Theatre are again collaborating for a series of productions, with classes on all aspects of a theatrical production starting on Monday; contact the Garde Arts Center at 860-444-7373 for registration information. And the Custom House Maritime Museum continues its cartooning classes with Jon Buller at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays; registration is $75, including materials.

It’s a good week to get out on the water. An annual flotilla of small boats will meet at Alewife Cove at 10 a.m. on Thursday to head from Niles Hill to Ocean Beach Park. And anyone looking to get their state boating license and certification can take a comprehensive day-long class on the subject starting at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at Holiday Inn; registration is $89.

Finally, you can check out the Child and Family Agency's book auction for a number of rare and autographed titles on Monday. The literature goes on the block starting at 1:30 p.m. at the B.P. Learned Mission.
