Mayor Suspends Basilica Without Pay

Firefighter and his wife were arrested for shoplifting from the UConn store in June.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio on Tuesday suspended fire Lt. Rocco Basilica without pay in the wake of Basilica's June arrest for allegedly shoplifting from the UConn store becoming public knowledge.

"On July 22, 2013, the City became aware of an arrest involving Lieutenant Rocco Basilica that occurred on June 25. We also became aware that Lt. Basilica was going on Workers’ Compensation beginning July 22nd," the mayor's press release stated.

"Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio proceeded to have discussions with our legal team, Chief Administration Officer Jane Glover, Fire Chief Henry Kydd, and our CIRMA representatives. At the conclusion of those discussions, the Mayor approved Chief Kydd’s recommendation to suspend Lt. Basilica without pay until final determination of his court case. This decision is consistent with City personnel policies when these situations occur."

The release said city payments will be halted and "any Workers’ Compensation payments will be decided by the Workers’ Compensation Commission."
