UPDATE: Survivor In Fatal Crash Released From Hospital

Two killed in early morning crash on Sunday

The survivor of a Sunday car accident which left two men dead has been released from , Deputy Chief Marshall Segar of the said on Monday.

Segar said 22-year-old Jonathan Hayer was driving the 1999 BMW 528i sedan, which was registered in his name, when it collided with a tree just outside the entrance for the on Vauxhall Street. Passengers Emilano "Pookie" Perez, 22, and Orlando "Capo" Acosta, 21, later died of injuries.

Segar said police detectives and an accident reconstructionist are investigating the cause of the accident. He said additional information will be released later this week.

Friends and family members of two men killed in an on Sunday poured out their grief with visits to the scene of the crash and online messages. A steady stream of visitors made their way to the site through the afternoon and evening.

Raphael Hayer said his brother, 22-year-old Jonathan Hayer, was the driver of the vehicle. Raphael said he knew the two passengers only by their nicknames, “Capo” and “Pookie,” names which were present on bouquets left at the site and online messages.

In a Facebook post identifying Perez, Renaissance Riley of New London recalled spending time with him at Edgerton Elementary School.

“This is the first person I met when I first went to Edgerton. Always short and funny as hell even if you were the butt of his jokes,” she wrote in a mid-day update on Sunday. “I remember sitting next to him as a kid coloring, playing kick ball and arguing.”

Emily De La Rosa, who said on Facebook that Acosta was her cousin, wrote early on Sunday, “[Y]ou in a better place now but you didnt have to go yet.” Monica Vazquez, a New London resident, wrote on Facebook on Sunday evening, “Pookie & Capo you guys will truly b missed & I love you guys both! Jonathan..baby everything is gonna be okay & you are gonna pull thru just fine..ima be right by ya side thru it all.”

A Facebook user named Tu Reina, or “Your Queen” in Spanish, wrote on Sunday evening, "R.I.P Orlando acosta & pookie perez will always b remember.” About three hours later, she wrote, “no hay palabras para describir lo k duele perder no 1 pero 2 amigos mas de una manera tan tragica R.I.P Orlando acosta & Pookie perez...siempre los recordaremos.” This translates to, “There are no words to describe it…it hurts to lose not one but two more friends in such a tragic way. R.I.P. Orlando Acosta and Pookie Perez…we will always remember them.”  

According to their Facebook profiles, Perez is a 2007 graduate of and Orlando Acosta worked for the Thomas G. Faria Corporation in Uncasville. Hayer’s profile says he is a New London resident from Manhattan.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said that a cause of death had not been determined for either Acosta or Perez as of Monday morning.
