The New London County Historical Society was founded in 1870, and has been located in the Shaw Mansion sinceMore 1907. The Society's research library contains original manuscripts, newspapers, reference works and other records of local history. It has an extensive collection of references for those interested in local genealogy. Also on view are collections of historic photographs and postcards, 18th and 19th century artifacts and furniture and a rare, 13-star American flag.</p> <p>The Mansion itself was built by Captain Nathaniel Shaw in the mid-1700s and remained in the same family until it was bought by the Historical Society. It was used as Connecticut's Naval Office during the Revolutionary War. The grounds include two historic gardens dating to the Victorian and Colonial eras. And, yes, George Washington slept here.</p>

Flock, a professional not-for-profit theatre company, was founded in 1989. They concentrate on classics,More from Shakespeare and the Greeks to more modern playwrights like O'Neill and Wilde. Shows are held year round in various locations in New London such as the Custom House Pier, the Shaw-Perkins Mansion, and the First Congregational Church. The company also travels to perform wherever they are invited, for various ages and audiences, throughout New England and beyond. They are well-known for their puppetry. Flock is involved in arts education on several levels, working with schools and community programs, as well as running their own Conservatory and hosting artists-in-residence. </p> <p>Hours, restrictions and parking information vary depending on the show and location.
