Lyman Allyn Art Museum
625 Williams St, New London, CT 06320
Sandwiched between the Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum is a Neo-Classical…More structure which almost seems orphaned from one of the campuses. Named in honor of a whaling captain whose daughter left $1 million toward the foundation of the museum upon her death in 1926, the museum weathered the Great Depression to open in 1932 with only 13 objects. Today, it hosts between 12,000 and 14,000 pieces of American fine and decorative art as well as European prints and paintings. The museum also holds revolving exhibits, lectures, and children's activities and is open free of charge to New London residents.
