I would remind those who have worked so tirelessly and concertedly to "save" Riverside…Read More Park from federal acquisition that it also might be appropriate to "save" it from Landmarks. Mosey on up to the Lyman Allyn Museum and take a gander at that expensive, old horse-watering monument erected by the rich folk up on the hill to commemorate one of their own. It was removed from Hodges Square some years ago when the folks on the hill thought it might be at risk, considering the low-rent virus that seemed to have hit the square. Now it's hidden off to the side of the museum like an orphan out in the cold and Landmarks is giddy with hopes that it will be returned to Hodges Square. For what purpose, I ask myself, other than as a feather in Landmark's cap. Thank goodness those New Jersey firefighters showed up after Mr. Hallisey took the initiative. If we leave it to Landmarks, I fear the park will be postcardy looking and as empty of life as does Starr Street seem to be outside of its closed, oh-so-quaint-and-historic doors. If Landmarks had any sense, it would be rolling out the red carpet for the Jersey firefighters. Got my fingers crossed that someone who, in fact, lives in New London, might become Landmark's next executive director. Wouldn't that be nice!

Only the Landmarks could take a simple kind generous offer and turn it into a 2 hour…Read More meeting.....lets go. Build the thing. This is the same bunch that didn't want the nice almost new abandoned state of the art playscape that is on Cedar Grove Ave because it had some plastic parts. All of a sudden plastic is OK. No kidding...all the better playscapes have primary colored plastic parts because they are better. Want to screw up a GREAT offer....put it with this committee. Guaranteed! Not everything is has historic value....some things are just really nice like this project. Go save an old house or something else. Playscapes is not your business. Thank you Friends of Riverside.....you should be handling this.

I agree, Wayne. Friends of Riverside has been working since February 21 of 2012 to have a playscape…Read More located in Riverside Park and now, because of one families tragedy, a little girl named Emilie's love of trees and the compassion and generosity of the New Jersey State Firefighters MBA, our community is being honored.
The only thing to discuss is our committment to playing it forward by helping to honor another child and community.
