Dating back to 1652, Ye Antientist Burial Ground is one of the oldest graveyards in the region. The city maintained it until 1793, and families owning plots continued to manage it until 1845. The site overlooks the Thames River, and Benedict Arnold is said to have stood nearby to observe the British attacks on Fort Griswold and New London in 1781.
