Opening its campus in New London in 2009, the U.S. Coast Guard Research and Development Center studies ways to improve the technologies that help the Coast Guard in its mission of security and saving lives. The center is working on approximately 80 projects at any given time. In addition, the center is home to the Coast Guard's Marine Safety Laboratory, which conducts forensic oil analysis to assist in the enforcement of pollution laws, and the International Ice Patrol, which monitors Atlantic icebergs to promote safe navigation.
