An offshoot of St. Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, St. Joseph's was established as a second Catholic church in response to New London's population growth. The present Gothic-style building replaced a temporary chapel established on the site in 1907. The Church is a parish of the Diocese of Norwich and is affiliated with the nearby St. Joseph School, which was founded by the Church in 1937.
