This residence is where playwright Eugene O'Neill spent his childhood and early adulthood, and gets its name from the intials "MC" carved into a newel: a reference to O'Neill's frequent appearance in the play "Monte Cristo." O'Neill spent many summers here, and the setting inspired some of his works. It is the setting for his plays "Long Days Journey Into Night" and "Ah, Wilderness!" The cottage is now owned by the Eugne O'Neill Theater in Waterford and run seasonally, May 26 through Sept. 4, as a museum.
