The 14th Annual Eugene O'Neill Celebration

The Eugene O'Neill Theater Festival will hold this annual celebration at Monte Cristo Cottage in New London October 17-18. The event is free and open to all.

This weekend, The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center celebrates the life and work of New London's famous playwright, Eugene O'Neill. The theme of the 14th Annual Eugene O'Neill Celebration is Realism: The Birth of a Playwright and a New American Drama.

The program will use O'Neill's earliest plays to explore the transition of American theater from 19th century melodrama to 20th century realism and track O'Neill's journey as a playwright. The two-day event begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, October 18 with an outdoor screening of The Long Voyage Home at Monte Cristo Cottage.

The celebration continues at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, with selected readings from The Count of Monte Cristo; a complete reading of The Web, and selected readings from Desire Under the Elms. Each reading will be followed by a panel discussion and the entire program will culminate in an open house at Monte Cristo Cottage until 4 p.m.

All events will be held at Monte Cristo Cottage, which was once the O'Neill family summer home, at 325 Pequot Avenue, New London. The program is free and open to everyone. Sign-up and registration for Saturday's program begins at 9:30 a.m.  or you can register by calling (860) 443-5378 or via email at theaterlives@theoneill.org.
