New London Waterfront will be Smokin' on September 29

Barbecue and grilling enthusiasts throughout the country will compete for top recognition in Connecticut's Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) third annual contest in New London on Sunday, September 29.

The City of New London and the Downtown New London Association are proud to host the state of Connecticut’s Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) state championship  for the third year in a row. 

Barbecue and grilling enthusiasts throughout the country will compete for top recognition in the State. The winner of the event will qualify to compete in the American Royal Barbecue in Kansas City in October 2014. This year the event will take place on September 29, 2013 at New London Waterfront Park.  

The Best BBQ Chef Competition is attracting some of the top competitors in the grill world. Myron Mixon, the “winningest” man in barbecue will be participating in the New London, CT BBQ Competition. Myron has won over 180 grand championships, 30 state championships, and 11 national championships. He has over 1800 trophies which he displays proudly in his home in Unadilla, GA. This October he is set to be inducted into the BBQ Hall of Fame at the American Royal in Kansas City, MO. 

Myron is the host of BBQ Pitmasters on Destination America, and has released two New York Times Bestselling cookbooks; “Smokin’ with Myron Mixon” and “Everyday Barbecue.” He has also made appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Late Show, Conan, ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show and QVC to name a few.  

Most Recently, Myron has partnered with Waterford-based fabricator, Seconn Fabrication to launch his own line of barbecue smokers. His revolutionary water smoker design utilizes the benefits of steam and smoke to take you to a whole new level of barbecuing. Lead by Owner Rob Marelli, Seconn has a history of unmatched speed, precision, technical knowledge, was a former Fabricator of the Year and runner up for National Small Business of the Year. 

Together, Rob and Myron have formed Myron Mixon Smokers, and have created a kick-ass smoker for every BBQ enthusiast; commercial, consumer, and competition. 

Local restaurants will be selling BBQ, including State Street Saloon which will be selling rib plates with beans and corn bread as well as smoked chicken wings. The New London Fire department will be selling BBQ food for a fundraiser. Uncle D’s Blazin BBQ will be selling pulled pork, ribs, and chicken with all the fixins’.  

Even if BBQ food is not your thing, the event includes some smoking bands. At noon on City Pier stage  Andre, Eddie and Friends will perform. Andre Danford and Eddie Aledia set the standard for musical collaborations. They both have extensive band history’s and bring a myriad of musical genres to the table. Andre’s soulful vocals/percussion and Eddie’s powerful guitar playing consistently deliver strong live performances. The music is always hot and sassy and the level of supporting musicianship is second to none. Funk, Blues, Rock, Jazz…..it’s all in the melting pot. 

Performing at 1 p.m.Roomful of Blues, which has been performing non-stop for over 40 years. According to Down Beat magazine, Roomful of Blues, “is in a Class by themselves. With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard."

Since 1967, the group’s deep-rooted blend of swing, rock’n’roll, jump, blues and soul has earned five Grammy Awards nominations and a slew of other accolades, including seven Blues Music Awards (one for Blues of the year in 2005).
