Community Corner

This Week In New London, June 5-11

It’s an eclectic mix of things to do between the events posted at New London Main Street and those on the New London Patch calendar.

The art world kicks things off with art forgery. New York Times bestselling author B.A. Shapiro visits the Monte Cristo Bookshop at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to do a reading of her novel The Art Forger, followed by an interview and book signing. The Garde Arts Center and New London County Historical Society team up for an appraisal event on Thursday. Bring your items into the theater starting at 6 p.m. to see what they’re worth; admission is $5, plus $5 for every item appraised, with proceeds going to the historical society. David Fryburg has had a photography exhibit up at the Provenance Center, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday he’ll be in the gallery to give a talk on the show; Tai Chi master David Chandler will also be on hand for a short presentation.

The New London Community Orchestra offers not one but two free concerts this weekend. The first one takes place at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Coast Guard Academy’s Leamy Hall, followed by a second performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday at City Pier. Also on Sunday, Golden Ratio’s Originals and Traditionals open mic starts at 5:30 p.m. at Captain’s Pizza with Pat Daddona and Mike Ball as the featured musicians.

For educational opportunities, Connecticut Open House Day means plenty of deals at New London’s museums. There is free admission at the Hempsted Houses, Custom House Maritime Museum, and Fort Trumbull State Park along with costumed interpreters and musket demonstrations at the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse. On Monday, the Child and Family Agency has thousands of volumes available at its book auction; this starts at 1:30 p.m. at the B.P. Learned Mission.

In other events, Kathleen McClung is the featured poet at Hygienic Art’s “First Thursday” poetry reading; this starts at 7 p.m. And the first annual Winthrop Magnet Elementary 5k run or walk takes place on Saturday, with registration at 9 a.m. and the start of the race an hour later. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the race.
