Red Cross Helps 30 People Displaced By Yesterday's Fire

The American Red Cross is helping 30 people – 24 adults and six children – in 18 families after the fire yesterday on State and Green Streets in New London. Eleven Red Cross workers spent several hours at the scene, working with families to meet emergency needs. Nearly all the affected families were able to make alternate housing arrangements.

The Red Cross is providing emergency housing for three families and is providing all families help with emergency food and clothing needs. The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire.

Spokesperson Paul Shipman said the Red Cross would remain available to meet with any additional residents needing help. He thanked the volunteers for their work throughout the day at the scene.

“We are so fortunate to have dedicated and compassionate volunteers who give so generously of their time to help their neighbors in need,” Shipman said. “We could not do this work without their help or without the generous support of donors.”
