Sports and Wellness Day for BDJMS 8th Graders

On Friday, April 12, 2013, the 8th grade students at Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School traveled to the US Coast Guard Academy to participate in their annual “Sports and Wellness Day.”  This event is put on by the Coast Guard Academy’s Athletics Department and balances sport activities and education on how to eat for a balanced meal and proper nourishment.

Students traveled through eight different stations.  They were: basketball, personal defense, physiology of fitness, cardio/fitness machines, football, soccer, volleyball, and a demonstration of the scuba rescue and dive exhibition.  The students were all active participants and had a blast.  They played full volleyball and soccer games, ran pass routes in football, calculated the calories burned in the fitness room, and learned karate in personal defense.  They learned all about how our bodies need fuel to train and operate at peak levels and were educated on how to eat a healthy, balanced, meal.  Finally, they watched as the Coast Guard cadets put on a diving exhibition while another cadet performed rescue operations in the pool area.

The day was a complete success thanks to Coach Bill George from the Coast Guard and Erin Sebastianelli as our school point of contact.  A special thank you goes out to all the coaches and cadets that hosted our 8th grade students for without their dedication and openness to us, the day would not have been possible.
