Beat Cabin Fever with Professional Art Classes at the Lyme Art Association -- New Watercolor Instructor Jerry Caron Joins Wonderful Group of Teachers

The Lyme Art Association offers the perfect cure for the winter doldrums—studio art classes for students of all ages, skills, and experience.

For over 100 years, artists have been painting and exhibiting their works in Old Lyme. The Lyme Art Association, founded by the original American Impressionists, takes great pride in the quality and depth of the studio art classes offered all year long. The Association’s professional art instructors teach in a relaxed, friendly environment. Class emphasis is always on the individual student's creative development and growth.

The LAA is delighted to introduce its new watercolor instructor, Jerry Caron. Jerry's connection to the LAA goes back to 1978, when the Lyme Academy of Art was located right in the Association’s studio, and he was one of its first instructors.

Jerry graduated in 1963 from the Vesper George School of Art in Boston.  In 1976, he decided to pursue a full-time fine art career after working in publishing.  He has studied privately with Harvey Dinnerstein, Aaron Shikler, Burt Silverman, and Morton Kaisch at the Art Students League in New York.

Jerry was a member of the faculty of the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts for seventeen years, where he taught Drawing, Perspective, Composition and Design, Color Theory, and Landscape painting in watercolor and oil.  His work has been featured on the cover of Yankee magazine and his illustrations have appeared in Backpacker magazine and a children's encyclopedia published by McGraw-Hill.

Jerry joins a team of wonderful LAA instructors who currently offer an array of classes – from life drawing to acrylics and figure sculpture. Among LAA’s superb instructors teaching this winter are Eileen Eder, Jack Montmeat, Robert Noreika, Hollis Dunlap, Joann Ballinger, and Don Gale.

Eileen Eder received her MFA from New York Academy of Art. She is an accomplished painter who has won numerous awards both locally and nationally. Her work was a recent top award winner in the Hudson Valley Art Association Juried Exhibit hosted by the LAA. Eileen’s work has won top awards for three years running in Artist’s Magazine in the category of Still Life. An experienced instructor, Eileen is known for her positive attitude while making painting and drawing easily understood and rewarding.

Jack Montmeat is an award-winning local portrait painter and illustrator with a studio in East Lyme, CT. Jack grew up in Old Lyme, and began taking classes at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts as a teenager. After receiving his BFA from the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio in 2002, as well as studying in Paris and Florence, he began painting portraits full-time. Jack has been teaching drawing and painting as well as monitoring at the Lyme Art Association since 2002. Jack is also an illustrator for Major League Baseball.

Robert Noreika is a prominent painter whose work hangs in both corporate and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Robert’s passion for art is matched by a natural talent to paint a wide variety of subjects, highlighted by expressive coastal scenes, intimate woodland pictorials, and seasonal treks through the countryside. He has illustrated magazine editorials and seven books.

Hollis Dunlap graduated from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts in 1999.  While at the Academy, he was the first student artist to be awarded First Prize at New York's National Arts Club exhibition two years in a row.  Hollis was also the recipient of the Academy's John Stobart Fellowship, awarded each year to a graduating student in recognition of outstanding work.  In the winter of 2001, Hollis studied at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland.

Joann Ballinger is a well-known pastel artist who was educated at the prestigious Norwich Art School at the Norwich Free Academy. She exhibits in Connecticut's Art Cellar and Mystic Maritime Gallery, as well as Massachusetts' and Rhode Island's Eisenhauer and Lily Pad Galleries. Joann is also an award-winning member of the Pastel Society of America, and she has been featured in local and national magazines such as Connecticut and The Pastel Journal.

Don Gale creates sculptures and drawings that relish the possibilities for drama and movement inherent in the human figure. He studied drawing at Art Center College of Design, in Los Angeles, and later studied sculpture and drawing at Otis Art Institute, also in Los Angeles. Gale has exhibited his work at venues across the country.
