Flash Flood Watch In Effect Through Saturday Afternoon

Widespread rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected. Some higher amounts in the range of 4-5 inches remain possible by Saturday.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for New London County and most of Connecticut through Saturday afternoon as the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea move through the region.

The advisory says:

"The remnants of Tropical System Andrea will result in widespread rain across the tri-state area through early Saturday. Rainfall amounts   between 2 and 4 inches are forecast with the heaviest rain overnight. Maximum hourly rates could approach an inch, which could last for several hours. These rainfall amounts could lead to flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas as well as small stream flash flooding.   Main stem rivers should remain within their banks although a few may approach bankfull. It should be stressed that while we are expecting a prolonged period of rainfall, the main concern during this time period will be flashy responses across the urban areas and small streams."

The hurricane season started last Saturday and on Wednesday National Hurricane Center in Miami identified Tropical Storm Andrea as having formed in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm brought heavy rain to Florida Thursday before moving up the Eastern Seaboard Friday and Saturday.

According to wexedge.com, "the storm is forecast to speed up and pass near or just southeast of New England Friday night into Saturday morning. In Connecticut:

  • Periods of rain are likely through the day on Friday.
  • The heaviest rain comes late Friday night into early Saturday.
  • Winds will generally be light as the stronger winds stay well southeast of Connecticut.
  • Severe thunderstorms are NOT expected in Connecticut.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected. Some higher amounts in the range of 4-5 inches remain possible by Saturday."
