Trinity Picks Up Two Lacrosse Wins

Connecticut College defeated twice in Wednesday games

Trinity College defeated both Connecticut College lacrosse teams on Wednesday. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Lacrosse: Trinity 11, Conn College 7

The Trinity College men's lacrosse team earned its fourth consecutive victory, defeating Connecticut College 11-7 on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Wednesday.

The Bantams improve their record to 4-2 and are a perfect 3-0 in the NESCAC. The Camels slip to 2-4 with a 1-4 mark in league action.

Junior midfielder Steve Manning (Tyngsboro, Mass.) had two goals and two assists to lead the visitors. Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.) chipped in with two scores. T.J. Cholnoky (Greenwich, Conn.) was 7-for-9 on the face-off and accounted for the goal that proved to be the difference in the third quarter.

Peter Johnson (Riverside, Conn.) made seven saves in the setback for the Bantams.

Connecticut College junior midfielder Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) scored three goals for the Camels. Junior John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) chipped in with two scores. JR Hartgers (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) finished with a goal and an assist in the setback.

Senior Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) made 11 saves in the cage.

Eicher opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the first and then Hartgers capitalized on an unsettled situation to put the Camel on top 2-0 with 7:27 remaining in the quarter.

But Trinity responded by scoring the next three goals, pulling ahead when Terence Olson (Avon, Conn.) scored with 37 seconds left. However, Eicher answered for the hosts with 7.6 seconds remaining and the game was tied up at three after one quarter of action.

Trinity controlled the second quarter of action, holding an 11-to-6 advantage in shots and a 6-to-2 edge in ground balls. Matthew Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored with 1:58 remaining to vault the visitors out to a 6-3 advantage at the break.

Jack Griffin (Seaford, N.Y.) provided the hosts with a third period highlight, scoring a man-down goal to make it a 7-4 game with 8:47 remaining. But Cholnoky cashed in on an extra man opportunity with 6:30 to go and Trinity carried an 8-4 lead into the fourth quarter of play.

Lyons and Eicher scored goals in the fourth and the Camels made it a 9-6 game with 7:27 remaining.

But Trinity responded with goals from Jeff Hebert (Cornwall, Ontario) and Manning to push the lead back to 11-6.

The visitors were able to hold on for the 11-7 triumph.

The Bantams will host Tufts University this Saturday for a 1 p.m. game in Hartford, Conn. The Camels return to action Saturday with a 1 p.m. NESCAC game against Colby College.

Women's Lacrosse: Trinity 14, Conn College 4

The Trinity College Bantams raced to a 10-3 advantage at halftime and closed out the visiting Connecticut College Camels, 14-4, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this evening on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 5 in the nation, improves to 6-0 with its 20th consecutive regular-season victory, while the Camels fall to 3-4 with their first loss in four games.

With the game tied at 1-1 following goals by Trinity senior co-captain midfielder Liz Bruno (Andover, Mass.) and Camel junior tri-captain attacker Libby Nichols (Baltimore, Md.) after eight minutes of play,. Trinity rattled off three unanswered tallies over the seven minutes for a 4-1 lead at the 16:50 mark. Connecticut College senior tri-captain midfielder Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) cut the Trinity led in half with 15:36 on the clock, but Bantam junior attacker Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) scored back-to-back unassisted goals and Bruno added an man-up tally to push the Bantam advantage back up to 7-2 with 4:36 left before the break. Camel sophomore attacker Lowell Abbott (Manchester, Mass.) scored on a free position just over a minute later, but Trinity answered with six straight scores over nearly a 20-minute span to put the game out of reach.

Trinity more than doubled the Camel shot output with a 31-15 advantage and held a 20-to-11 edge on ground balls, while forcing 20 Connecticut College turnovers. Duncan led all scorers with four goals, while senior attacker Caite Irvine (Westwood, Mass.) notched three goals and one assist, and sophomore attacker Shea Kusiak (Longmeadow, Mass.) added two goals and one assist. Junior Olivia Whitney (Danvers, Mass.) and rookie Bridget Kitchen (North Andover, Mass.) made three saves apiece in the Bantam cage, while junior midfielder Megan Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) recorded team-highs of six ground balls, four draw controls, and four caused turnovers but did not score a goal for the first time in 17 games. Four different Camels scored goals, while junior goalie Kelsey Burke (Atlanta, Ga.) had seven saves, and junior midfielder Caroline Corbett (Norwood, Mass.) registered three ground balls, three draw controls, and a game-high five caused turnovers for Connecticut College.
