Tie And Loss For Mitchell In Soccer Games

Mariners face Daniel Webster on Sunday

An enormous save count by Mitchell College's goalkeeper helped maintain a scoreless tie against Daniel Webster College in the women's soccer game on Sunday, while the Mariners' men's soccer team fell to the Eagles without putting a goal on the board. The following information was provided by Ken Belbin, assistant director of athletics at Daniel Webster College, and David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

Men's Soccer: Daniel Webster 2, Mitchell 0

Senior Spencer Bernard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) netted the go-ahead goal 2:47 into the second half, sophomore Kyle Walton (Brookline, N.H.) added an insurance tally in the 57th minute, and senior Joe Keene (Bristol, N.H.) made 11 saves helping host Daniel Webster past Mitchell College, 2-0 in a New England Collegiate Conference men’s soccer matchup Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The win halted a three-game winless streak for the Eagles (6-4-1, 2-1 NECC), while the Mariners (3-6-1, 1-2 NECC) dropped their third straight.

The team finished even in shots on goal (11-11) and after a scoreless opening half, DWC pressed quickly to open the second. Eagle fullback Andrew Donovan (Milford, N.H.) sent a long pass straight up the middle to junior Alex Towne (Northfield, Mass.), who headed it forward through two defenders to a streaking Bernard.

Bernard beat the defense and tucked a 10-yarder past Mitchell keeper Kevin Woodward (Niantic, Conn.) to break the tie. Walton would up it to 2-0 at the 57:22 mark, heading home an Alex Jackson (Kent, Ohio) corner kick off the left post back to the top right corner.

Mitchell pressed but Keene, who had six stops in the second half, knocked down a terrific shot from Tommy Derosier (Brooklyn, Conn.) with 22 minutes remaining and followed with two point blank saves in the final 10 minutes including a stop on Mitchell’s James Gleason (Old Lyme, Conn.) with eight minutes to go and another on Derosier with three minutes left.

DWC would finish with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and an 18-15 edge in total shots. Woodford would finish with nine stops for Mitchell.

Senior goalkeeper Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) stopped a remarkable 25 shots including nine in overtime as the Daniel Webster women’s soccer team battled to a double overtime scoreless draw with Mitchell College in a New England Collegiate Conference women’s soccer meeting Sunday at Eagle Field.

Waller stopped 16 shots in regulation, five in the first overtime and four in the second as the Eagles (0-7-1, 0-3-1 NECC) registered their first point of the season.

Kaylee Woodford (Niantic, Conn.) made five saves for the Mariners (4-2-2, 2-0-2 NECC).

Mitchell controlled the tempo throughout but strong Eagle team defense kept most Mitchell shots outside the box as the Mariners finished with a 34-6 total shots advantage and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Mitchell created two terrific opportunities and nearly walked away with the win late in the second overtime as Madeline Crow (Rockville, Md.) took a pass in front but was stoned by Waller from eight feet out. Maariyah Lombardo (Middletown, Conn.) added a second bid off a Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) feed but her shot from six yards was tipped by Waller off the left crossbar preserving the tie.

Nikki Gassert (Woodbridge, N.J.) had three shots for DWC, while TC DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) added two.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday visiting Green Mountain at 4:00 p.m.

Mitchell visits St. Joseph, Conn. on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
