RPI defeats Connecticut College women's lacrosse team 8-7

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute held off Connecticut College on Monday in a Florida pairing of the schools' women's lacrosse teams. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Afton Marshall (Windham, N.H.) scored four goals to lead the RPI women's lacrosse team to a 7-6 victory against Connecticut College in the first round of the Spring Fling Florida Classic at West Palm Beach Monday.

The Engineers improve to 2-1 with the win. The Camels are 0-2 in early season action.

Senior Abby Hill (Stoneham, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Camels on the offensive side of the ball. Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) collected a team-best five ground balls, adding a goal and an assist in the contest.

Senior Celia Medeiros (Portsmouth, R.I.) caused four turnovers for Connecticut College. Rookie net-minder Caitlyn Cataldo (Milford, Conn.) made six saves to go with four ground balls in a strong performance between the pipes.

The Camels held a 27-to-16 advantage in ground balls and out-shot RPI 23-to-15 in the contest.

RPI carried a 4-3 lead at the half and built a 7-4 advantage when Whitney Kukol (Johnson City, N.Y.) scored with 18:40 remaining.

The Camels responded though. Driscoll trimmed the deficit to 7-4 with a marker at the 14:21 mark. With 21 seconds remaining, Cameron Flaherty (Hingham, Mass.) scored to make it a 7-6 game.

But RPI was able to keep the Camels off the scoreboard in the closing moments to hold on for the 7-6 win.

Sophomore net-minder Allie Arnal (Lakewood, N.Y.) stopped 11 shots in goal for RPI.

In the first stanza, Hill put the Camel on top 3-2 with 9:15 remaining. But RPI closed out the half with consecutive scores to carry a 4-3 advantage into the break.
