New London police, fire departments face off and raise money for educational fund memorializing young victim of 9/11 attacks

The and met for their ninth annual game held to recognize those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and raise money for an educational fund named after a young New London victim of the attacks.

The Juliana Valentine McCourt Memorial Softball Game took place on Veterans Memorial Field in Waterford. Following the national anthem and performances by the New London Firefighters Pipes and Drums, David McCourt made some brief remarks. McCourt, formerly of New London, lost his wife Ruth McCourt and four-year-old daughter Juliana Valentine McCourt in the attacks. Both were aboard the second plane to hit the World Trade Center.

"It's sort of painful reliving it," he said. "It's part of moving on. They want me to move on and continue on a productive manner."

McCourt said he appreciated the creation of a as well as an educational fund in his daughter's name. The softball game is held every year to collect money for the , whose mission is “to educate young people everywhere in the virtues of generosity, kindness, and the acceptance of differences among cultures, races, and religions.”

In the prior eight games, the police department has won five and the fire department two; one game, in 2008, was rained out. This year, the fire department held the lead for much of the game, but the police department was able to rally in the last inning, scoring four runs for a final score of 10-9.
