New London Sports Roundup: Whalers' Baseball Starts CIAC Tournament This Week

National sailing and track competitions close out Coast Guard and Connecticut College seasons

New London High School

The baseball team defeated Wheeler 10-6 on Monday and lost to Norwich Free Academy 4-2 on Tuesday, closing its regular season at 11-9. It was enough to earn the Whalers a spot in the CIAC Class LL Tournament. The team is ranked 17th and will play North Haven (12-8, ranked 16th) at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montville swept the New London softball team 5-0 on Monday. The team also lost to East Lyme 15-2 on Tuesday, but won its final game of the season by defeating Grasso Tech 10-2 on Wednesday. The team’s final record of 2-17 did not qualify them for the Class M Tournament.

The girls’ tennis lost to Killingly 5-2 on Monday before defeating Norwich Tech 4-3 on Tuesday. They close the season at 2-16 and will not take part in the Class M Tournament.

The boys’ tennis finished its season last week with a record of 3-15. No New London athletes are listed among the competitors in the CIAC Tournament’s brackets.

Track and field athletes will take part in Class MM Championships on Wednesday.

Williams School

The Williams School has concluded its regular 2012-2013 athletic season.

Local colleges

Both the Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College had athletes competing in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the past week. See the next section for the standout performances.

Connecticut College’s women’s sailing team took part in the Inter Collegiate Sailing Association/Sperry Top-Sider Women's National Championship in Florida, placing eighth.

The performances conclude the 2012-2013 athletic season at all New London colleges.

Standout athletes

  • Isaias Cruz: batted in two runs and scored two of his own in New London’s baseball win against Wheeler, according to The Day 
  • Mike LeDuc: won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the NCAA Division III Championships for track and field, breaking his Connecticut College record with a time of 8:50.58. 
  • Samantha Overton: struck out nine batters and had two RBIs in New London’s softball win against Grasso Tech, according to The Bulletin 
  • Adam Scalesse: again broke his own Coast Guard Academy record in the 110 hurdles by posting a time of 14.13 in the NCAA Division III Championships in track and field; Scalesse was also named an All-American athlete in the event for the fourth year in a row 
  • Kaitlin Ward: Coast Guard Academy basketball player, selected to be part of a Division III basketball team representing the United States in three exhibition games to be played in Italy this summer 
  • Ben Wolhaupter: Coast Guard Academy athlete, placed eighth in pole vault at the NCAA Division III National Championships in track and field with a height of 15 feet, seven inches; Wolhaupter earned All-American athlete in event
