New London Sports Roundup: Whaler, Bear Football Routs

Big wins for New London High School and Coast Guard Academy football teams; NLHS seeking soccer wins

High School

The New London High School football team again routed an opponent in a weekend game, defeating East Lyme 45-7 on Saturday. According to The Bulletin, head coach Duana Maranda is still looking for some offensive improvement; East Lyme's touchdown came early and kept the Whalers on their toes, but New London had a 20-point advantage at the half. The team's record remains undefeated at 3-0, and they'll next play North Haven at home at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Lyman Memorial defeated the NLHS volleyball team in a 3-1 game on Sept. 24, but they came back to pick up its first win of the season by defeating Wheeler 3-1 on Friday. The team's record now stands at 1-4, and they play a home game against Montville at 5:30 p.m. today.

New London's soccer teams have yet to break a pair of losing streaks. The girls team is at 1-5 after three 5-0 losses: to Montville on Sept. 24, Lyman Memorial on Wednesday, and Ledyard on Friday. They're currently playing Killingly in an away game. The boys' team is at 0-6 after losing a 4-2 result to Montville on Sept. 25, a 1-0 game to Lyman Memorial on Thursday, and a 2-0 game to Ledyard on Saturday; they next take to the field in an away game against Windham on Tuesday.

The Williams School boys' soccer team lost a 4-2 result to St. Andrews School on Sept. 24 and an 8-1 game to St. Thomas More School on Thursday but defeated Falmouth Academy 6-1 on Saturday; their record now stands at 2-6. The girls' soccer team has more ties than wins or losses, with a 1-1-3 record after a scoreless game against Marianapolis School on Sept. 24 and 9-0 loss to the Hyde School on Saturday. The field hockey team picked up two wins - 4-1 against Fitch on Sept. 24 and 4-2 against Cheshire Academy on Saturday - but also lost a JV game 1-2 to Hopkins on Saturday to come out of the weekend with a 2-4 record.

College

The Connecticut College women's soccer team won the Whale Cup game against the neighboring Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, with two goals in the first half sealing a 2-1 victory. The team lost to Bowdoin College in a 3-2 game on Saturday, putting them at 1-5-1. The men's soccer team (2-2-3) defeated UMass Dartmouth 2-1 on Wednesday before fighting Bowdoin to a scoreless tie on Saturday. Tufts dealt the volleyball team (11-2) a 3-1 defeat on Friday, but otherwise the Camels continue to dominate with two more wins, including a 3-0 victory on Saturday that put an end to Bowdoin's 40-game winning streak. The field hockey team is at 4-3 after losing a 2-1 game against Wellesley on Wednesday and a 7-0 game to Bowdoin on Saturday.

The Coast Guard Academy football team crushed Fitchburg in a 59-0 game on Saturday, bringing their record to an even 2-2. The men's soccer team improved its record to 6-3 after defeating Mass. Maritime 4-0 on Sept. 25 and Clark 1-0 on Saturday, while the women's team fell to 1-7 after the Whale Cup loss and a 3-0 defeat against Clark on Saturday. The volleyball team had a mix of wins and losses, ending the week with a 10-8 record.

Mitchell College racked up two 3-0 wins in volleyball, defeating Curry on Monday and Becker on Saturday to put their record at 4-7. The men's soccer team (3-4) was less fortunate, as Albertus Magnus defeated the Mariners 3-1 on Wednesday and Elms won 2-0 on Saturday.
