New London Sports Roundup: Schools Conclude Athletic Seasons

The New London High School baseball team lost its bid for the Class L title in the CIAC Tournament on Tuesday. In the first round of competitions, the Whalers fell to North Haven 2-1. The team finishes the season with a season record of 11-10.

Several NLHS athletes also competed in the CIAC outdoor track and field championships.

The third annual Mitchell College Athletics Golf Tournament will take place at 1 p.m. on June 10 at the Stonington Country Club. Entry is $125 per person and supports the college’s athletics program. For more information, contact Michele Nolan at 860-701-5049 or nolan_m@mitchell.edu.

Youth sports continue during the summer. Find out more about sports activities offered by the New London Recreation Department at their website as well as the upcoming schedules for New London’s Little League teams and New London Soccer Club.

There are also a variety of boat races during the summer, including the famous Yale-Harvard Regatta at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Thames River. The Thames Yacht Club has several races planned, and the New London Currach Rowers are always looking for new people before their August regatta.

Running races kick off Saturday with the first annual five-kilometer run or walk at 10 a.m. at the Winthrop School. There’s also the Sailfest road race on July 14, the traditional Ocean Beach triathlon on July 21, and the 11.6-mile Kelley race on Aug. 3.

The sports roundup will be on hiatus until the resumption of high school and college sports. Check in on June 17 for a replacement series that will run through the summer.
