New London High School starts baseball season with two wins; Connecticut College women's water polo undefeated in week of games

New London High School

The Whalers’ baseball team got its 2013 season off to a good start in the first week of regular competition. The team crushed Grasso Tech in a 17-3 win on Wednesday, then went on to defeat Stamford 4-3 on Thursday. The team takes on Woodstock Academy in a 4:15 p.m. home game on Tuesday, Waterford in a 3:45 p.m. away game on Thursday, and Montville in a noon away game on Saturday.

The softball team was less fortunate, getting walloped in its opening two games. The Whalers lost to Coventry 18-0 on Wednesday and to Montville 16-0 on Friday. They play Windham in a 4 p.m. away game today and Killingly and Woodstock Academy in 4 p.m. home games on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

The tennis teams dropped their opening matches, with the boys’ team falling 4-3 to Norwich Free Academy on Thursday and 4-3 to Killingly on Friday. The girls’ team also lost 4-3 to NFA and dropped the Killingly results 6-1. In 3:45 p.m. matches, the teams go up against Griswold today and Woodstock Academy on Wednesday; the boys play at home, the girls at away venues.

Williams School

The Blues’ baseball team started with an 11-7 loss to Masters on Wednesday, then edged Block Island School with a 6-5 win on Saturday.

The lacrosse teams are off to an undefeated start, with the girls besting Wheeler 16-8 on Wednesday and Watkinson 16-14 on Saturday. The boys’ lacrosse team defeated Chase Collegiate 8-7 on Saturday.

The tennis team is also undefeated with a 5-2 win against the Gunnery School on Wednesday and a 7-0 sweep of Hyde on Saturday.

Coast Guard Academy

The baseball team (14-9) defeated Mitchell College 13-11 on Wednesday. Wheaton swept the Bears 4-0 on Friday. The team split with Wheaton on Saturday, winning the first game 7-3 before losing the second one 2-0.

The softball team (12-8) defeated Wesleyan 6-4 on Wednesday and split with Clark on Saturday, winning the first game 5-3 before losing 7-5.

The men’s tennis team bested Springfield 8-1 on Wednesday, then lost to Babson 6-3 on Saturday.

The women’s track and field team took second of 14 teams in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. The men’s team placed third of 13 teams.

In sailing action, the academy won the inaugural Barque Eagle Team Race by placing first of three participating teams.

Rowing started its season with both the men’s and women’s team placing third in Saturday’s UConn Invitational.

Connecticut College

The women’s water polo team (12-6) tacked on six wins in the Carthage College round robin over the weekend. The Camels had a 10-8 win against Washington and Jefferson and 11-9 victory against Grove City on Wednesday, then defeated Penn State Behrend 19-3 and Utica 18-2 on Saturday. The team closed the weekend with a 14-5 defeat of Macalester and 15-5 victory against Carthage.

The men’s lacrosse team (7-2) boosted its record with an 11-5 win against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday and a 11-9 victory over Montclair State on Friday. The women’s team (3-7) fought through four overtime periods on Tuesday but ultimately fell to Plymouth 16-5; the Camels went on to beat Roger Williams 11-4 on Wednesday.

The women’s tennis team had a 5-4 win against Babson on Tuesday, lost to Mount Holyoke 5-4 on Saturday, and swept Smith 9-0 on the same day. The men’s team dropped two results, falling 8-1 to Trinity on Wednesday and 5-4 to Babson on Friday.

At the American International College Invitational for track and field on Saturday, the women’s team placed 10th of 16 teams while the men’s team placed 12th of 17.

Rowing’s season opener on Saturday had the women’s team placing second and the men’s team finishing third in a field of four teams.

In women’s sailing over the weekend, the Camels were 14th of 17 teams in the Boston University President's Trophy Regatta. The coed team was 13th of 15 teams in the Friis and Marchiando Team Racing Regatta.

Mitchell College

The Mariners had the honor of earning the first division title offered by the New England Collegiate Conference in men’s lacrosse, defeating Daniel Webster 15-2 on Saturday. This followed a 10-5 win against Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, with the team having an 8-2 record for the season.

The college has also started up a women’s varsity lacrosse program. The team will play exhibition games this year, but will not be in the NCAA until next year.

Following the loss to the Coast Guard, the baseball team (11-10) split with Daniel Webster on Saturday with a 7-3 loss and 3-2 win. The team finished the weekend with another loss to Daniel Webster, falling 8-3 on Sunday.

The softball team (5-17) had a tougher week, picking up only one win in six games. The Mariners dropped two 7-1 results to Fitchburg State on Wednesday, then split with Elms on Saturday with a 4-3 win an 10-2 loss. On Sunday, the team twice lost to Newbury in 4-3 and 11-3 results.

The men’s tennis team had three losses in the week, falling to Regis 6-3 on Tuesday, to Lesley 5-4 on Wednesday, and to Becker 5-4 on Saturday.

  • Riley Beecher: struck out three in the Coast Guard’s baseball win against Wheaton 
  • Graham Cavanaugh: Mitchell tennis player, named NECC Collegiate Conference Player of the Week 
  • Jack Fader and Charles Maynard: each scored four goals in the Williams School lacrosse win against Chase Collegiate, with Maynard scoring the game-winning goal in the final minutes according to The Bulletin 
  • Andrew Freedman: had four goals for Connecticut College in the Camels’ lacrosse win against UMass-Dartmouth and five goals in the win against Montclair State on Friday 
  • Lili Goldberg: scored five goals in the Williams School lacrosse win against Watkinson 
  • Nicky Jasbon: Connecticut College water polo player who tallied up 23 goals, 14 earned ejections, 13 steals, eight assists, and two blocked shots during the weekend matches 
  • Kristine Kahl: allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out two in the Coast Guard’s softball win against Clark 
  • David Klapp: had four goals for Mitchell in the lacrosse win over Mount Saint Vincent and five goals in the defeat of Daniel Webster 
  • Erin Lisko and Stephanie Sarwinski: each had home runs to bring in four runs in the Coast Guard’s softball win over Wesleyan 
  • Monet Masters: broke a Coast Guard Academy record that stood for 10 years with a pole vault of 10 feet, eight inches at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational; the previous record was 10 feet, six inches set by Betsy Baker in 2003 
  • Bri Miller: had four goals and an assist for Connecticut College in the lacrosse win against Roger Williams 
  • Miguel Miranda: batted in three runs with a double in the Whalers’ win against Grasso Tech 
  • Kenneth Olszewski: Mitchell baseball player, named NECC Collegiate Conference Player of the Week 
  • Lindsey Romagnino and Bridget Thomson: each had home runs in Mitchell’s win against Elms, with Thomson putting two runs on the board and Romagnino hitting the walk-off solo homer to win the game for the Mariners 
  • Jeremy Santos: struck out eight batters for the Whalers in the win against Grasso Tech and batted in the winning run in the win over Stamford 
  • Adam Scalesse: named as both the NEWMAC and Coast Guard Academy Athlete of the Week
