New London Sports Roundup: Connecticut College Wins Water Polo Championship

Mitchell College sweeps Elms in baseball; NLHS and Williams School at 3-2 for season in baseball

New London High School

The Whalers’ baseball team picked up five runs in the sixth inning of their game against Woodstock Academy on Tuesday, ultimately winning 9-8. The team went on to suffer two defeats, getting swept 3-0 by Waterford on Thursday and losing to Montville 7-4 on Saturday. They’re at 3-2 for the season. The Whalers next face East Lyme and Grasso Tech in 11 a.m. home games on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

The softball team is still searching for a win. Windham swept the Whalers 16-0 on Monday while Killingly won an 11-4 game on Wednesday. A game against Woodstock Academy was delayed by Friday’s rain and will take place in a noon home game this Wednesday. The team will also play Ledyard in a 4 p.m. away game on Tuesday.

The boys’ tennis team swept Griswold 7-0 on Monday, then lost to Woodstock Academy 6-1 on Wednesday. The girls’ team lost to Griswold 4-3 on Monday and Woodstock Academy 7-0 on Wednesday. The teams are off this week and resume competition on April 22.

In a track and field against Norwich Free Academy on Wednesday, the boys lost to NFA 86-64 while the girls fell 116-34. The Whalers next compete at the Panther Invite on Saturday.

The golf team dropped its three opening competitions in 7-0 defeats to NFA on Monday, East Lyme on Wednesday, and Fitch on Thursday. The team is off until April 23.

Williams School

The baseball team (3-2) was swept 10-0 by Bancroft on Monday. The Blues went on to defeat Watkinson 5-3 on Wednesday before losing to South Kent 5-2 on Saturday.

The girls’ lacrosse team dealt St. Andrews a 21-4 blow on Wednesday, remaining undefeated with a 2-0 record in the early season. The boys’ lacrosse team is at 1-2 after losing to Rocky Hill 15-8 on Tuesday and coming back to defeat Cheshire Academy 18-3 on Wednesday.

The boys’ tennis team defeated St. Andrews 7-0 on Wednesday and is undefeated after their first three matches of the season.

The sailing team defeated Branford 2-1 in Monday racing.

Coast Guard Academy

The baseball team (18-11) needed a couple of extra innings to defeat Westfield State 9-7 on Monday, then went on to beat Framingham State 9-1 on Thursday. The Bears split a doubleheader with MIT on Saturday, winning 2-1 before losing 12-2, then took the Sunday series cap with a 2-0 win.

The softball team (15-11) earned two wins against Western New England on Wednesday, prevailing 9-3 and 5-4. Babson twice swept them 2-0 on Saturday, but the team recovered to defeat WPI 10-0 and 3-2 on Sunday.

The men’s track and field team placed second at the Springfield Invitational while the women’s team placed third.

The women’s rowing team won both of its competitions on the Merrimack River on Saturday, while the men’s team took three of four.

The men’s tennis team lost to MIT 8-1 on Saturday.

Connecticut College

The women’s water polo team captured the program’s first league title with a series of weekend wins at the Division III Championships. The Camels defeated Penn State Behrend 18-4 and Washington and Jefferson 8-7 on Friday, then Grove City 6-3 on Saturday. The team finishes its regular season with a 15-6 record and will go on to compete in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championship.

The men’s lacrosse team earned its sixth win in a row on Tuesday by defeating Babson 10-3. Hamilton snapped this winning streak by defeating the Camels 5-4 on Saturday. The team’s record for the season is 8-3.

The women’s lacrosse team (4-8) defeated Amherst 10-8 on Wednesday, then lost to Hamilton 9-7 on Saturday.

The men’s tennis team fell to Amherst 9-0 on Friday and to Tufts 7-2 on Sunday. The women’s tennis team was swept 9-0 by Trinity on Tuesday and Amherst on Thursday.

The sailing team placed eighth in the New England Dinghy Championship/Coast Guard Alumni Bowl over weekend, qualifying for Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Semi-Final Championship

The women’s rowing team placed fourth and fifth in Saturday races in Worcester.

Individuals from the track and field teams competed in the Brown University Springtime Invite on Saturday.

Mitchell College

The baseball team (15-10) took four games in a weekend series with Elms. The Mariners won 6-4 and 3-0 on Saturday, then completed the sweep with 8-4 and 6-5 wins on Sunday.

The softball team is at 7-19 after weekend games. The team split with By Path, winning 7-5 and losing 7-6. The Mariners also split a doubleheader with Becker, losing 9-3 and taking the second game 7-1.

The men’s tennis team defeated Newbury 7-2 on Tuesday, then Wheelock 9-0 on Saturday.
