New London Sports Roundup: Colleges Tie Win Records

Coast Guard baseball and Mitchell lacrosse team match school season bests; Williams School has two undefeated teams

New London High School

East Lyme swept the Whalers 5-0 on Thursday, but the Whalers came back for a sweep of their own on Friday by defeating Grasso Tech 13-0. The team is at 4-3 for the season. The Whalers head to 3:45 p.m. away games against Fitch on Tuesday and Lyman Memorial on Thursday, then play Bacon Academy at the Dodd Stadium at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The softball team is still winless after a 12-1 loss to Ledyard on Tuesday and a 12-5 loss to Woodstock on Wednesday. The team next plays St. Bernard and Stonington in 4 p.m. home games on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, as well as a 4 p.m. away game against Bacon Academy on Friday.

The track and field teams competed in the Plainfield Panther Invite on Saturday. The Plainfield venue will also be where the Whalers compete against East Lyme in a 4 p.m. meet on Friday.

Some teams had the past week off, but resume competitions this week. The boys’ tennis team plays 3:45 p.m. away matches against Norwich Free Academy today and against Windham on Tuesday, then plays St. Bernard at 3:45 p.m. at home on Wednesday. The girls’ tennis team goes up against NFA at home today at 3:45 p.m., then a home match against Windham and away match against St. Bernard at the same time on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

The golf team will play East Lyme at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Old Lyme Country Club and Bacon Academy 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Chanticlair Golf Course.

Williams School

The girls’ lacrosse team is at an undefeated 4-0 record following a 15-3 victory against Montville on Wednesday and 19-13 triumph over Providence Country Day on Friday. The boys’ team (1-4) lost to Bancroft 7-3 on Wednesday and dropped a 7-6 overtime result to Falmouth Academy on Saturday. 

The boys’ tennis team is also undefeated, posting a 7-0 win against St. Thomas More on Monday and 6-1 win against Moses Brown on Wednesday.

In their only game of the week, the Blues’ baseball team lost to Marianapolis 9-7 on Wednesday. The team’s record stands at 2-4 for the season. 

Coast Guard Academy

The magic number was 21 for the baseball team this past week. After a 7-5 win against Springfield on Monday, the team beat Wesleyan for the first time in 21 years with an 8-4 result on Wednesday. The Bears then tied their season wins record at 21 by besting Mass. Maritime 9-7 on Thursday. They couldn’t get beyond that point, as Babson swept the Bears in a weekend series, defeating them 2-1 and 7-6 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday. The team is at 21-14 for the season.

The softball team (19-13) twice shut out Manhattanville on Wednesday, earning 3-0 to 2-0 wins. The team lost to Springfield 8-2 and 7-3 on Friday, then split a Saturday doubleheader with Wheaton by taking the first game 8-0 and dropping the second one 15-11.

The men’s tennis team lost to Connecticut College 7-2 on Tuesday, defeated Roger Williams 8-1 on Thursday, and lost to Wheaton 5-4 on Saturday.

Track and field athletes competed in the Holy Cross Decathlon before heading to the Silfen Invitational hosted by Conn College on Saturday. At that meet, the men finished second while the women placed third.

The women’s rowing team placed fourth in the NEWMAC Championships on Sunday, while the men won one of four races in the season’s final home regatta on Saturday.

Connecticut College

The men’s lacrosse team boosted its record to 10-3 by defeating Amherst 8-7 on Tuesday and Bates 9-8 on Saturday. The women’s team (5-9) came back from a 6-1 deficit to beat Springfield 8-6 on Tuesday, but lost to Bates 9-8 on Saturday.

Following the win against the Coast Guard, the men’s tennis team had two 8-1 losses. The Camels fell to Bates on Saturday and Wesleyan on Sunday. The women’s team lost to Bates 9-0 and Wesleyan 7-2.

At the Silfen Invitational, the women’s team placed second while the men finished fifth.

The coed sailing team placed fourth of 17 teams in the Thompson Trophy regatta hosted on the Thames River over the weekend.

Mitchell College

The baseball team (17-11) had a cumulative 30 run shutout of Lesley on Saturday, winning a doubleheader with 19-0 and 11-0 games. The Mariners couldn’t seal the series on Sunday, losing to Lesley 3-2.

The softball team (8-21) lost to St. Joseph 12-4 and 5-0 on Wednesday. The team returned to defeat Southern Vermont College 8-6 and 10-0 on Sunday.

The men’s lacrosse team got past Nichols for an 11-10 win on Wednesday. This put their record at 9-2 for the season, tying the school’s win record in the spot at nine.

The men’s tennis team lost to Regis 5-4 on Monday, but had a series of wins to finish the week. The Mariners bested Becker 6-3 on Wednesday, Newbury 7-2 on Thursday, and Wheelock 9-0 on Saturday.

Standout athletes

  • Abby Bishop: Coast Guard decathlete who broke her own school record with 4,287 points at the Holy Cross Decathlon and is ranked 12th in Division III
  • Bobby Bleisten: stopped 21 shots in Connecticut College’s lacrosse win against Bates 
  • Kaisea Caramante: pitched a shutout game against Southern Vermont College in Mitchell’s second softball game against the school 
  • Matt Hanks: hit a sacrifice fly to break a 7-7 tie and bring the Coast Guard to its baseball victory against Mass. Maritime 
  • J.R. Hartgers: made the game-winning lacrosse goal in the men’s game against Amherst 
  • Al Jordan Johnson and Zachary Simmons: Mitchell athletes named NECC Rookie of the Week for baseball and men’s tennis, respectively; Johnson also struck out three batters in pitching the shutout against Lesley
  • Kristine Kahl and Sammy Yuknat: Coast Guard pitchers who threw shutouts in the softball games against Manhattanville; Kahl struck out eight batters in the first game and also pitched the shutout in the win against Wheaton 
  • Clay Kosack: set a personal best in the decathlon with 6,098 points and is ranked eighth in Division III 
  • Maddy Lahm: scored four goals in the Williams School’s lacrosse win against Montville and seven goals in the win against Providence Country Day 
  • Derek Petty and Adam Scalesse: named NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week and Track Athlete of the Week, respectively 
  • Shane Sullivan: netted three goals for Mitchell in the game against Nichols
  • Taylor Thomas: had three goals and two assists for Connecticut College in the women’s lacrosse win against Springfield 
  • Quantique White: pitched a no-hitter in New London’s win against Grasso Tech, according to The Bulletin
