New London Sports Roundup: College Seasons Coming To A Close

Connecticut College water polo places ninth in CWPA Eastern Championship; Mitchell College misses NECC title in men's tennis

New London High School

The baseball team’s season record evened out at 5-5 after the week’s action. The Whalers lost to Fitch 9-2 on Tuesday, defeated Lyman Memorial 10-2 on Thursday, and lost to Bacon Academy 4-1 on Saturday. The team is playing Norwich Free Academy at 3:45 p.m. today, then traveling to Woodstock Academy for a 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday and facing Waterford at home at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

The Whalers’ softball team fell to St. Bernard 13-6 on Tuesday, to Stonington 17-2 on Wednesday, and to 7-1 on Friday. They’re at 0-9 for the season and will seek that elusive win in a series of 4 p.m. games this week: against Griswold and Killingly on their turf on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, and at home against Windham on Friday.

The boys’ tennis team lost to NFA 4-3 on Monday, defeated Windham 4-3 on Tuesday, and twice lost to St. Bernard 4-3 on Thursday and Friday. In 3:45 p.m. matches, the Whalers will face East Lyme at home today and Lyman Memorial and Bacon Academy on their courts on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

The girls’ tennis team lost to NFA 6-1 on Monday, defeated Windham 6-1 on Tuesday, and lost to St. Bernard 5-2 on Wednesday. They also play in 3:45 p.m. matches this week, away against East Lyme today and at home against Lyman Memorial on Wednesday and Bacon Academy on Friday.

The boys’ track team tied East Lyme on Saturday, with each team earning 75 points. The girls’ team lost to East Lyme 110-36. The Whalers go up against Bacon Academy in a 4:30 p.m. away meet on Tuesday and head to the Middletown Invite at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

The golf team lost two 7-0 games, to East Lyme on Tuesday and to Bacon Academy on Thursday. The team faces NFA at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at New London Country Club, Woodstock Academy at the Quinnatisset Country Club at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, and Tourtellotte at 3 p.m. on Friday at New London Country Club.

Williams School

The boys’ tennis team remains undefeated after seven matches this season, picking up 7-0 sweeps of St. Andrews on Wednesday and Marianapolis on Saturday. 

The girls’ lacrosse team (5-1) lost their first game of the season, falling to Falmouth 9-7 on Saturday. This followed a 27-14 defeat of Chase Collegiate on Tuesday.

The boys’ lacrosse team defeated St. Andrews 15-4 on Monday, but lost to St. Thomas More 12-7 on Wednesday and Hamden Hall 13-8 on Saturday. They’re at 3-5 for the season.

The baseball team defeated St. Thomas More 11-4 on Monday, but the was unable to pick up another win in the week. Providence Country Day School dealt the Blues a crushing 26-0 sweep on Wednesday, and they dropped an 11-2 result to Marianapolis on Saturday. The team is at 3-6 for the season. 

Coast Guard Academy

The softball team (22-15) is alive and kicking in the NEWMAC Tournament. The Bears split a Thursday doubleheader with ECSU on Thursday, winning a 3-2 result and losing an 8-2 follow-up. The team held on for a 1-0 defeat of Babson and 3-2 victory over Wheaton in the Saturday tournament.

The baseball team (21-16) was less fortunate in their NEWMAC Tournament. A 7-5 loss to Wheaton on Saturday, followed by a 13-2 loss to Babson, knocked them out of contention.

In the track and field action in the NEWMAC Championship on Saturday, the men placed third and the women placed seventh.

The men’s tennis team closed its season at 4-12 after losing an 8-0 match to NYU on Tuesday.

The rowing teams competed against Williams in a series of races on Saturday, but did not win any of them.

Connecticut College

The men’s lacrosse team (12-3) picked up another two wins during the week. The Camels erased a 6-1 first half deficit in a Wednesday game against Wesleyan to earn an 11-10 victory before going on to defeat Hamilton 8-6 on Saturday.

The women’s lacrosse team ended their season with a 16-9 loss to Wesleyan on Wednesday, finishing with a 5-10 record overall.

In the Collegiate Water Polo Association Eastern Championship, Brown knocked the Camels out of serious contention by defeating them 17-6 on Saturday. The team recovered to defeat Mercyhurst 9-7 on the same day, then finished the championship in ninth place after a 10-9 overtime triumph over Gannon on Sunday.

The women’s tennis team defeated Hamilton 6-3 on Saturday, but lost to Colby 8-1 on Sunday. The team closes out at 4-10 for the season.

The men’s tennis team dropped two 6-3 results, to Hamilton on Saturday and Colby on Sunday. The team ends the season with a 2-12 record.

The track and field teams competed in the NESCAC Championship on Saturday, with the men’s team placing ninth and the women’s team placing 11th. 

The women's sailing team qualified for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Semifinals after placing sixth in the New England Women's Championship/Reed Trophy race. 

Mitchell College

The baseball team (21-11-1) defeated Eastern Nazarene 9-2, then settled for a 4-4 tie after the second game in the Wednesday doubleheader was called due to darkness. The Mariners swept a weekend series against Southern Vermont College, defeating them 11-2 and 15-4 on Saturday before capping the trio with a 9-5 win on Sunday.

The softball team closed its regular season with a 10-23 record. The Mariners started the week’s action with 13-7 and 2-1 losses to Daniel Webster on Thursday, but won a doubleheader against Wheelock on Saturday with 14-1 and 23-2 results.

The men’s lacrosse team couldn’t quite top the school’s season win record, falling to Mass. Maritime 14-8 on Monday to close its regular season at 9-3.

The men’s tennis team earned a spot in the NECC Championship, defeating Lesley 6-3 in Wednesday semifinals before losing the final to Regis 7-2 on Saturday.

Golf is normally a fall sport at Mitchell but the Mariners participated in a spring tournament on Wednesday, finishing last in a field of five teams at the Blazer Invitational.

Standout athletes

  • Ashley Amey: recorded 10 saves, including five in the final quarter, to help Conn College’s water polo team defeat Mercyhurst 
  • Will Baker: Coast Guard athlete, won the discus in the NEWMAC Championships with a distance of 147 feet, two inches 
  • Bobby Bleistein: named NESCAC Player of the Week and stopped 12 shots in Conn College’s lacrosse win against Wesleyan 
  • Meghan Burke and Tiffany Person: each had their 100th career hit during Mitchell’s softball doubleheader against Wheelock; Burke drove in six runs in the games 
  • Graham Cavanaugh, Randy Coons, and Zachary Simmons: Mitchell College tennis players who won in doubles and singles at the semifinals of the NECC Championships against Lesley; Simmons was named NECC Player of the Week
  • Aaron Hosking: struck out six batters in Williams’ win against St. Thomas More
  • Kristine Kahl: pitched the entirety of the Coast Guard’s softball games against Babson and Wheaton in the NEWMAC Tournament 
  • Morgan Kingston: batted in the one run in the Coast Guard’s softball win against 
  • Babson Clay Kosack: named Coast Guard Academy’s Athlete of the Week as well as the NEWMAC Athlete of the Week for track for his prior performance at the Holy Cross Decathlon 
  • Maddie Lahm: had seven goals and two assists in the Williams’ lacrosse win against Chase Collegiate 
  • Erin Lisko: batted in two runs in the Coast Guard’s softball win over Wheaton, including the winning run 
  • John Lyons: scored three goals in Conn College’s lacrosse win against Wesleyan, including the game winning shot; scored his 100th point in the game against Hamilton 
  • Charles Maynard: had five goals for Williams in the boys’ lacrosse win against St. Andrew’s 
  • Kelsey Millward: scored the winning overtime goal in Conn College’s water polo match against Gannon 
  • Kenneth Olszewski: batted in three runs in Mitchell’s baseball games against Eastern Nazarene 
  • Adam Scalesse: Coast Guard athlete, named NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year; also set a meet, school, and facility record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.16 seconds 
  • Kyle Sutschek: won the women’s discus in the NEWMAC Championships with a distance of 129 feet, 11 inches 
  • Ben Wolhaupter: Coast Guard athlete who won the pole vault at the NEWMAC Championships with a height of 15 feet one inch
