New London Sports Roundup: Coast Guard Baseball Falls To MIT In ECAC Final

Mitchell College knocked out of ECAC tournaments; Williams School tennis undefeated after 10 matches

New London High School

The baseball team is at an even 8-8 after two wins in the past week. The Whalers bested East Lyme 1-0 on Monday, dropped a 12-0 result to Fitch on Tuesday, then defeated Windham 13-8 on Friday. The team faces Griswold at 3:45 p.m. today and Norwich at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday in home games, then travels to Norwich Tech for a 3:45 p.m. away game.

The softball team (1-13) lost to Ledyard 13-2 on Tuesday before getting swept 21-0 by Stonington on Thursday. In a series of 4 p.m. games this week, the Whalers take on Griswold on Tuesday at home, Wheeler on Wednesday and Tourtellotte on Thursday in away games, and Grasso Tech on Friday at home.

The boys’ tennis team (2-12) lost to Fitch 5-2 on Monday and to Woodstock Academy 6-1 on Tuesday. They play Stonington at 3:45 p.m. today on the home court, East Lyme at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday on their court, and Fitch and Killingly at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday and 2 p.m. on Sunday, respectively.

The girls’ tennis team lost to Fitch 6-1 on Monday and was twice swept 7-0, by Woodstock Academy on Tuesday and Waterford on Friday. In 3:45 p.m. matches, the Whalers play Stonington today on their court, East Lyme on Wednesday at home, and Fitch on Thursday in an away match.

The track and field team went up against Woodstock Academy on Tuesday, with the boys’ team winning 104-36 and the girls’ team losing 90-57. The teams have a 3:45 p.m. home meet against Fitch on Tuesday.

The golf team lost to Fitch 6-1 on Tuesday in its only game of the week. They’ll face Bacon Academy and Woodstock Academy at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Williams School

The boys’ tennis team is still going strong, with an undefeated record after 10 matches this season. The Blues bested the St. Thomas More School 7-0 on Monday and went on to defeat Pomfret 4-3 on Friday.

The girls’ lacrosse team (8-3) eked out a 14-13 win against the Providence Country Day School on Tuesday, but dropped another narrow result with an 11-10 loss to Rocky Hill on Thursday.

The boys’ lacrosse team defeated Wheeler 13-3 on Monday, but lost to the Forman School 23-13 on Wednesday and to Hyde 16-5 on Friday. The team is at 4-8 for the season.

Chase Collegiate swept the baseball team 10-0 on Friday, dropping their season record to 4-8.

Coast Guard Academy

The baseball team had a strong late season showing, advancing to the ECAC Division III Championship semifinals with a 3-1 win over Husson on Thursday and to the championship game with an upset 7-2 win over top-ranked Suffolk on Saturday. The Bears fell in the final with a 2-0 loss to MIT, finishing the season at 24-18.

The men’s track and field team also competed in the All-New England Championships, finishing 11th in a field of 36 teams.

The academy also announced that it will be adding men's and women's lacrosse teams in the 2014-2015 school year, playing in Division III and the NEWMAC Conference. 

Connecticut College

At the ECAC National Invitational on Sunday, the women’s rowing varsity four won the gold medal and the varsity eight placed third in the fourth level final.

Mitchell College

Mitchell College concluded its 2012-2013 sports season by falling short in a pair of ECAC bids. The Mariners were knocked out of the baseball tournament’s opening round with a 6-4 loss to MIT on Friday. The team finishes with a 23-15-1 record.

The men’s lacrosse team also dropped its opening ECAC Tournament game with a 13-3 loss to the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday, ending with a 9-4 record for the season.

Standout athletes

  • Natalie Calhoun, Lindsey Cook, Seana Siekman, Maureen Sweeney: the varsity four rowing team that won the gold in the ECAC National Invitational with a time of 7:59 
  • Cameron Carroll: had a three-run homer for the Coast Guard in their baseball game against Suffolk 
  • Chris Collins: had 14 saves for Williams in the lacrosse win against Wheeler
  • Jack Fader: had three goals and three assists for Williams in the lacrosse win against Wheeler 
  • Maddie Lahm: had eight goals for Williams in the lacrosse win over Providence Country Day 
  • Charles Maynard: scored four goals in Williams’ win against Wheeler 
  • Sammy Miranda: scored three runs and batted in three more in New London’s baseball win against Windham, according to The Bulletin 
  • Derek Petty: pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out five batters in the Coast Guard’s baseball win against Husson 
  • Adam Scalesse: broke his own Coast Guard Academy record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 52.66 
  • Josh Vincent: pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters in New London’s baseball win against Windham, according to The Bulletin
