New London Sports Roundup: A Good Week For Baseball

Mitchell College bests Becker in heavy-hitting games; Coast Guard runner posts top national time

New London High School

New London High School’s baseball team has two home games to start its 2013 season, facing off against Grasso Tech at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Stamford at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday. The softball team has 4 p.m. away games against Coventry on Wednesday and Montville on Friday.

The boys’ tennis team has a home match against Norwich Free Academy at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday and a 3:45 p.m. away match against Killingly on Friday. The girls’ team has an away match against NFA at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday and 3:45 p.m. home match against Killingly on Friday.

The track and field teams compete against Montville and Stonington at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Montville High School.

Williams School

The baseball team has a 4 p.m. away game against Master’s School on Wednesday and a noon home game against the Block Island School on Saturday.

The boys’ lacrosse team competes against St. Bernard’s at home at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by an 11:30 a.m. away game against Chase Collegiate School on Saturday. The girls’ team plays North Stonington (Wheeler) at 4 p.m. at home on Wednesday and Watkinson in a noon away game on Saturday.

The tennis team starts with two away games, against The Gunnery at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Hyde School at 2 p.m. on Saturday

The sailing team takes on the Hand School at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at home, then hits the road for a 10 a.m. competition against Tabor Academy on Saturday.

Coast Guard Academy

The baseball team had a mixed week, splitting a Wednesday doubleheader with Albertus Magnus by winning the first game 1-0 and losing the second one 3-2. The team lost to Clark 2-1 on Friday, but came back to defeat the team 13-4 and 4-2 on Saturday to improve their record to 11-8.

The softball team (10-8) started strong with two Tuesday wins against Trinity; the 9-3 and 6-3 results extended the Bears’ winning streak to seven games. MIT put a stop to that on Friday, besting the Coast Guard in 10-2 and 4-1 games. The Bears also lost the first game of a Saturday doubleheader with Wellesley 13-4 before salvaging a 6-5 win.

The men’s tennis team defeated Johnson & Wales 7-2 on Tuesday, then lost to Clark 6-3 on Saturday.

The campus also hosted its own track and field meet on Saturday. The men’s team took second place at the Coast Guard Invitational, while the women’s team finished third.

Connecticut College

The men’s lacrosse team (5-2) defeated Trinity 10-3 on Wednesday, then recovered from an early 7-3 deficit to defeat Colby 11-10 on Saturday. The women’s lacrosse team (2-6) fell to Trinity 9-7 on Wednesday and to Colby 11-8 on Saturday.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to 1-4 for the season with losses to Bowdoin on Saturday. The women’s team was swept 9-0 while the men lost 8-1.

At the Coast Guard Invitational, the women’s team finished eighth while the men placed 10th.

Mitchell College

After a 9-3 loss to Johnson & Wales on Wednesday, the Mariners’ baseball team clobbered Becker with a weekend sweep. The team improved to 10-7 for the season with 13-7 and 23-2 wins on Friday as well as a 10-6 victory on Saturday.

The softball team (7-12) dropped both games in a Wednesday doubleheader to Johnson & Wales, losing a 10-2 result and then a 9-3 one. Lesley also swept the team on Saturday with 7-4 and 7-0 games.

The men’s lacrosse team won its one game of the week, defeating SUNY Cobleskill 11-7 on Wednesday to improve to 6-2 for the season.

Post University swept Mitchell 9-0 in the men’s tennis season opener on Tuesday, but the team came back to defeat Albertus Magnus 7-2 on Wednesday and Lesley 8-1 on Saturday.

Standout athletes

  • Neftali Arroyo: was six for six in hitting in Mitchell’s baseball sweep of Becker, batting in five runners and earning two runs with his first career homer in the first game
  • Tyler Babkiewicz and Cameron Carroll: each had two-run hits and ultimately drove in three runs for the Coast Guard in the second game against Clark on Saturday
  • Rocco Devona: won at both singles and doubles in Mitchell’s tennis win against Albertus Magnus
  • Summer Dupler: stole home to get one run on the board in the Coast Guard’s softball win against Wellesley
  • Andrew Freedman: had three goals in Connecticut College’s lacrosse win against Colby
  • Nolan Gallagher: batted in the one run in the Coast Guard’s win in the first game against Albertus Magnus
  • John Padilla: batted in three runs for Mitchell in the Saturday win against Becker
  • Joe Petry: scored the run in the Coast Guard’s win against Albertus Magnus
  • Chris Sawyer: had two goals and two assists for Connecticut College in the lacrosse win against Colby
  • Adam Scalesse: had the Division III best time in the nation in the 110 hurdles at the Coast Guard Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 14.43
  • Tyler Shamas: struck out five batters and gave up three runs in Mitchell’s second win against Becker
  • Shane Sullivan: had four goals for Mitchell in the win against SUNY Cobleskill
  • Kaitlin Ward: had a two-run single as part of the Coast Guard scoring in the softball win over Wellesley
