New London Runners Take Top Spots In Sandy Hook Run

Local residents take part in benefit event for families of December shooting victims

Two New London residents taking part in the inaugural Sandy Hook Run for the Families on Saturday were the top finishers in the event.

Stephen Pretak, 28, and Scott Mindel, 26, each finished with a time of 16:09 according to ChronoTrack Live results. The results placed Pretak as the top finisher.

The Connecticut Mirror reported that Pretak finished with a time of 16:10, one second ahead of Mindel. The Mirror said the two frequently run together in organized races, but were participating in Saturday's event to show support for its cause.

A total of 9,480 runners participated in the Hartford event with timing chips, although the total participation was about 15,000 runners, according to the Hartford Courant. The event raised $420,000 in donations and entry fees for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund administered by the United Way of Western Connecticut.
