Mitchell Takes Two From Lyndon State

Mitchell racks up victories on the ball field

Baseball: Mitchell College Sweeps Lyndon State

The Mitchell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lyndon State College by final scores of 9-0 and 11-1 on Saturday afternoon.  

Junior right-hander John Apostolo (Queens, N.Y./St. Mary’s) threw a three-hit shutout in the first game and combined to go 5-for-7 with seven RBI at the plate in the doubleheader. Freshman Jon Blair (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) earned the victory in the second game for the Mariners (8-3 overall).

Game 1: Mitchell 9, Lyndon State 0

Mitchell scored the only run it would need in the second inning on a ground out by sophomore Osmer Collado (New York, N.Y./St. Agnes Boys). The Mariners also added four runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take control. Junior Felix Colarte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and Apostolo each had RBI doubles in the fifth, and Colarte and senior Carlos Hughes (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) each added RBI singles in the sixth.

Apostolo (3-1 overall) posted his first shutout of the season and struck out a season-high nine batters while walking three in 7.0 innings. He didn’t allow a hit after the fourth inning and retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced.

Lyndon State’s Shane O’Donnell-Leach (Groton, Vt.) pitched 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on six hits while striking out four. He dropped to 1-1 overall on the season.

Game 2: Mitchell 11, Lyndon State 1 (6 innings)

The Mariners scored runs in every inning but the fifth to take the nightcap. Senior Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn./Newington) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and homered twice to lead the Mitchell offense.

Perillo wasted little time giving the Mariners the lead, sending a two-run homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning. Apostolo also scored a run in the frame on a fielding error by the Hornets.

Perillo duplicated the feat in the second inning, going opposite field once again for a two-run shot. Apostolo also went deep in the game, sending a two-run shot over the center field fence in the fourth.

Lyndon State (2-6 overall) scored its only run of the day on an RBI single by Patrick Hilton (Lyndonville, Vt.) in the sixth. It was the only run allowed by Blair (2-0 overall), who pitched his best outing of the spring and allowed only four hits in 6.0 innings. He struck out a season-high eight batters while issuing three walks.

Hornets starter Shane Fleury (Plainfield, Vt.) pitched 3.0 innings and gave up six runs on six hits. He dropped to 0-2 overall on the season.

Mitchell will next host Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. Lyndon State returns to action at Thomas College on Saturday, April 2 at 1:30 p.m.

 

Softball: Mitchell Splits With Lyndon State

The Mitchell College softball team split a doubleheader against Lyndon State College on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 in extra innings in the first game before holding on for a 14-13 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 – Lyndon State 4, Mitchell 2 (8 innings) 

Lyndon State (3-1 overall) plated a pair of runs in extra innings to win its third straight game of the season. The Hornets took the lead on an RBI double by Natalia Shams (Swampscott, Mass.) and added an insurance run on a ground out by Tia Billado (Bellows Falls, Vt.). Meghan Gadapee (Littleton, N.H.) then retired the Mariners in order in the bottom of the eighth to improve to 3-0 on the season inside the circle.

Mitchell (3-9 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the third when junior Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) singled home a pair of runs. The Hornets tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth thanks to RBI doubles from Mary Gagne (Highgate, Vt.) and Billado.

Gadapee (3-0 overall) threw 8.0 innings and allowed two runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Mitchell starter Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard) allowed four runs on five hits over 8.0 innings and struck out six.

Game 2 – Mitchell 14, Lyndon State 13

Mitchell needed every one of its season-high 14 runs to pull out the victory in the second game. The lead changed hands five times in the contest, with the Mariners overcoming a 10-7 deficit with a seven-run sixth inning. Lyndon State rallied for three runs in the seventh and had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position before Thomas worked out of the jam.

Freshman Tricia Tomaselli (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) picked up her first collegiate win in relief, allowing 11 runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Thomas, who made the start and also pitched the final frame, nailed down her first save of the season.

Kelly Butler (Hubbardston, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and scored three times for the Hornets. Sophomore Tiffany Person (Waterbury, Conn./Crosby) went 1-for-3 with three RBI and hit her first career home run—a two run shot in the third—to pace the Mariners.

Gadapee made the start for Lyndon State and gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 5.0 innings. Butler, who came in and pitched the sixth inning, took the loss. She surrendered seven runs (one earned) on three hits.

Mitchell will next host a doubleheader against Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. Lyndon State returns to action at New England College on Friday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m.
