Mitchell College split a doubleheader with Newbury College on Friday, winning the first game but losing the second. Mitchell’s record moved to 6-12 overall and 3-1 in NECC play. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:
Game 1 - Mitchell 7, Newbury 2
Mitchell got on the scoreboard in the top of the first after senior Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School) led off with a base hit, stole second base and scored on a fielding error. She then led off the third inning with another single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard).
Newbury scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mariners broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Juniors Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) and Shannen Pelletier (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) each had RBI singles in the frame while freshman Tricia Tomaselli (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) plated a run with a ground out.
The 7-1 lead was more than enough for junior Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard), who pitched a complete game and improved to 3-5 on the season. She allowed two runs on five hits over 7.0 innings and struck out six.
Pelletier went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI to lead the Mariners. Bordonaro also finished with a pair of hits.
Game 2 – Newbury 10, Mitchell 4
The Nighthawks plated 10 runs on 14 hits in the nightcap to come away with a split. Tomaselli took the loss inside the circle for the Mariners, giving up seven runs on 10 hits while striking out five in 4.0 innings.
Mitchell fell behind 3-0 in the second but rallied to get a run back in the third on an RBI double by Suplicki. The Mariners then tied the game in the fourth behind a ground out by Pelletier and a single by Thomas, both of which plated runs.
Newbury responded with four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take control. Mitchell tacked on a run in the seventh on a solo homer by Bordonaro but would get no closer.
Mitchell returns to the field on Saturday, April 9 for a doubleheader at Southern Vermont College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
