The Mitchell College baseball team opened the 2011 season with a bang, exploding for 22 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College on Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational. The Mariners took the first game by a 12-3 final and wrapped up the day with a 10-4 win in the second.

The wins were the first for head coach Scott Kingston, the first-year skipper for the Mariners. Junior John Apostolo (Queens. N.Y./St. Mary's) picked up the win on the mound in the first game while senior Paul Martinez (New London, Conn./New London) followed suit in the nightcap.

Mitchell's bats were hot from the start as the team pushed across nine runs in the first inning to vault to a 9-1 lead in the opener. Senior Carlos Hughes (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) fueled the offense with a double and a single and drove in a pair of runs while junior Angel Chacon (Queens, N.Y./Martin Luther) added a single and triple.

Apostolo was strong in his Mitchell debut, striking out eight batters over 5.0 innings. The lone run he allowed in the first inning was unearned.

Martinez was equally impressive in the second game and was nearly unhittable. He carried a no-hitter through 4.2 innings and struck out six in 5.1 innings of work.

Junior Felix Colarte (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and two singles while freshman Anthony Santiago (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) and senior Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn./Newington) each had three hits in the contest. Apostolo went 2-for-4 at the plate and homered.

Mitchell returns to action with a nine-inning tilt against Husson College at the RussMatt Invitational on Wednesday, March 9 at 9 a.m.
