Mitchell Defeated In Florida Doubleheader

Mariners fall to Baldwin-Wallace, Mt. Saint Joseph in Rebel Spring Games

Mitchell College lost two games Wednesday in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mitchell College softball team dropped a 9-1 decision in five innings to Baldwin-Wallace College and an 8-5 final in extra innings to the College of Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday at the Rebel Spring Games.

Game 1 – Baldwin-Wallace 9, Mitchell 1

The Yellow Jackets (7-0 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed, remaining unbeaten in Rebel Games play. Mitchell (0-6 overall) plated a run in the second inning on an RBI single by junior Shannen Pelletier (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) but managed only two more hits the rest of the game.

Junior Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard) made her third start of the spring and allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Game 2 – Mount St. Joseph 8, Mitchell 5

Mitchell took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning before Mount St. Joseph rallied to tie the score. The Mariners had a shot at winning the game in the bottom of the frame but had a runner thrown out at the plate to send the game into extra innings. The Lions then scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take control.

Mitchell took a 2-1 lead in the first inning after Mount St. Joseph pitcher Katie Cohill issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to junior Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard) and freshman Chelsea Arpin (Killingly, Conn./Killingly). The Mariners added two more runs in the fifth that included a RBI single by junior Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) and tacked on another in the sixth on a RBI double by sophomore Meghan Burke (Bronx, N.Y./Preston).

Hoxie and Burke each finished with two hits on the day as the Mariners pounded out a season-high eight hits. Freshman pitcher Tricia Tomaselli (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) had her best outing thus far, working out of numerous tight spots before tiring in the late innings. She allowed eight runs on 15 hits and struck out four in eight innings.

Mitchell returns to play at the Rebel Spring Games on Thursday with contests against Beloit College at 1 p.m. and Waynesburg University at 3 p.m.
