Mitchell Closes Cross Country Season

Mariners compete in region race in Maine

The Mitchell College men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Me. on Saturday to compete in the NCAA Division III Cross Country New England Regional races. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mitchell men competed as a team and finished 33rd out of 48 squads with a point total of 998. It marked the Mariners' best finish at the NCAA Regional in school history. The Mitchell women didn't score as a team but had three runners compete.

Freshman Sherif Ali paced the men's team and finished 95th overall with a personal-best time of 26:43.60 over the 8-kilometer course. Also scoring for the Mariners were freshman Evan Garrity (182nd, 28:13.47), freshman Jake Ustjanauskas (190th, 28:20.09), sophomore Drew Castagna (231st, 29:15.50) and junior Zach Hoch (306th, 32:50.60).

On the women's side, freshman Bridget Burns led the Mariners with a time of 26:54.74 over the 6-kilometer course and placed 268th overall. Classmates Tierney Caulfield (315th, 29:15.56) and Breanna Poirier (334th, 30:22.94) also crossed the finish line for Mitchell.

The event concluded Mitchell's 2011 season.
