Mitchell Batters Bring Home 21, But Can't Defeat Husson

Mariners fall to Eagles in Florida spring game

Mitchell College and Husson University proved you can go home again (and again, and again), racking up a total of 44 runs in Wednesday's game in Florida. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mitchell College baseball team came up on the short end of a nine-inning slugfest against Husson University on Wednesday, falling 23-21 at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Parks in Winter Haven, Fla.

Both teams put a lot of crooked numbers up on the scoreboard as Mitchell (2-1 overall) suffered its first setback of the season. The Mariners plated a season-high 21 runs on 20 hits but couldn't protect any of their leads. Husson (3-2 overall) went ahead for good thanks to a six-run eighth inning and then held Mitchell to a scoreless ninth to end the marathon game that lasted four hours and 20 minutes.

Mitchell jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning but gave up nine runs in the second to fall behind. The lead changed hands a total of five times in the game.

Freshman Anthony Santiago (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI while senior Jeff Perillo (Newington, Conn./Newington) went 3-for-5 with two walks. Senior Drew Rossi (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) drove in four runs to lead the offense and finished with a pair of doubles and a single in the game.

Mitchell will close out competition at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday, March 11 with a doubleheader against Wentworth Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
