Mariners Twice Shut Out At Rebel Games

Mitchell softball team loses to Geneva, Bluffton

Mitchell College was unable to put a run on the scoreboard Tuesday during the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimee, Fla. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

The Mitchell College softball team played better on the second day at the Rebel Spring Games but still came up short, losing 4-0 to Geneva College and 3-0 to Bluffton University on Tuesday morning.

The Mariners (0-4 overall) managed just two hits in the first game and three in the second. Sophomore Meghan Burke (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) and freshman Chelsea Arpin (Killingly, Conn./Killingly) each doubled in the opener while juniors Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School), Stacey Suplicki (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard) and Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) had hits in the finale.

The first game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Geneva pushed across a pair of runs against junior Marissa Thomas (New London, Conn./Saint Bernard). The Golden Tornadoes added two insurance runs in the sixth and kept the Mariners off the scoreboard. Thomas allowed eight hits over 6.0 innings.

Bluffton took an early lead behind a two-run first inning and never looked back. The Beavers added a run in the sixth, but starting pitcher Stevie Cuttitta wouldn’t need the extra support. She struck out eight over 7.0 innings and didn’t allow a runner past second base. Freshman Tricia Tomaselli (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) got the starting nod for the Mariners and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out one.
