Mariners Get Lacrosse, Tennis Wins

Mitchell College cruises past Daniel Webster and Becker on Monday

Mitchell College held off a late rally by Daniel Webster College to pick up a men's lacrosse win on Monday, while the Mariners also defeated Becker College on the tennis court. The following information was provided by Ken Belbin, assistant athletics director at Daniel Webster College, and Matt Tittle, sports information director at Becker College:

Men's Lacrosse: Mitchell 9, Daniel Webster 7

DWC (3-8) trailed 7-3 after Mitchell’s Demetre Lyras (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored off a Jordan Cook (Groton, Conn.) setup with 8:37 remaining, but the Eagles would strike three times in the span of just 1:15 as rookie Dan Knupfer (Corfu, N.Y.) notched two strikes 35 seconds apart and then set up Chris Gordon (Groton, Mass.) with 6:22 remaining for a 7-6 game.

Adam Grillo (Waterford, Conn.) put Mitchell (5-6) back ahead with an unassisted score with 4:26 to go but DWC tightened things again as Justin Chiulli (Saugus, Mass.) sent home a Nate Burr (Southbury, Conn.) pass with 56 seconds left.

DWC would win the faceoff but lose possession deep in Mitchell territory, allowing Shane Sullivan (Quaker Hill, Conn.) to take a long pass from Tyler McDonald (Waterford) and score with 25 seconds left to ice it.

Sullivan would finish with five goals and an assist to lead the Mariners, who won their third straight and for the fourth time in their last five. Cook and Joshua Muckle (Uncasville, Conn.) also scored. Ben Carr (Stratford, N.J.) added two assists and a team-high six ground balls.

Knupfer finished with three goals and two assists for Daniel Webster, while Eric Mulford (Canton, Mass.) and Kieran Kavanaugh (East Lyme, Conn.) added single goals. Chiulli would pull in a game-high six groundballs.

Tommy Driscoll (South Boston, Mass.) finished with 11 saves for DWC, while Peter Eschenfelder (Quaker Hill) had 11 stops for the Mariners.

Sullivan had scored twice to open things up in the first quarter and Knupfer added his first for a 2-1 game after one. Mulford would tie it with 5:09 to go in the second and Kavanaugh put the hosts ahead 3-2 48 seconds later. But Cook would follow off a Sullivan pass with 54 seconds to go and Muckle beat the clock with one second remaining to put Mitchell up 4-3 at the half.

Sullivan would pot two goals in the third for a 6-3 game after three.

Mitchell finished with advantages in shots on goal (20-18), groundballs (27-24), and clears (19-9) while the Eagles won the battle on face offs (11-7). The teams combined for 19 penalties.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday when they visit intracity rival Rivier for a GNAC contest at 8 p.m.

Mitchell closes its season next Tuesday when they host Nichols at 4:30 p.m.

Men's Tennis: Mitchell 9, Becker 6

Mitchell College defeated Becker College 6-3 in New England Collegiate Conference men’s tennis action Monday afternoon. The win lifts the Mariners to 7-0 overall and 7-0 in the NECC, while Becker falls to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in league action.

In number one doubles action, Rocco Devona (Waterford, Conn) and Andrew Small (Westerly, R.I.) of Mitchell College breezed past Tim Howard (Paxton, Mass.) and Branden Parkhouse (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) 8-0. The Mariners earned the win in doubles play when Rajan Bawa (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Alexander Fusco (Saugus, Mass.) defeated Brian Piquette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Jake Gilbert (Huntington Beach, Calif.) 8-2. Becker was able to salvage the win in number three doubles action when Jason Alera (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and David Graham (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) bested Randy Coons (Yonkers, N.Y.) and Chris McKeon (North Scituate, R.I.) 8-6.

In number one singles play, Rajan Bawa defeated Timothy Howard in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Mitchell also won number two singles after Rocco Devona glided past Jake Gilbert 6-0, 6-0. Branden Parkhouse kept things interesting for the Hawks when he defeated Andrew Small in number three singles 6-3, 6-1. The Mariners secured the victory when Alexander Fusco defeated Brian Piquette in a third set tiebreaker 6 -3, 5-7, 11-9. David Graham won a hard fought battle in number five singles when he outlasted Timothy Atkinson (Fall River, Mass.) 5-7, 6-0, 6-3. Randy Coons took number six singles from Jason Alera 6-4, 6-0, making the final 6-3 in favor of the Mariners.
