Mariners Drop Basketball Game To Albertus Magnus

Mariners fall to undefeated team on Tuesday

Mitchell College lost a 97-64 men's basketball game on Tuesday, failing to defeat the undefeated Albertus Magnus College at a home game. The following information was provided by David Longolucco, sports information director at Mitchell College:

Albertus Magnus (4-0 overall) used a 10-0 run late in the first half to lead 38-31 at the half. The Falcons then exploded for 59 second-half points to seal the victory. Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) led all scorers with 22 points while teammates Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn./Career) and Arshad Jackson (Hartford, Conn./Hartford Public) each added 21.

Senior Enoch Contreras (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca) led Mitchell (2-3 overall) with 11 points while freshman Trace Lanson (Boca Raton, Fla./Berean Christian School) finished with 10. Sophomore Joshua Ford (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Anthony) recorded a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points, five assists, three steals and two blocks.

Albertus Magnus trailed only in the opening minute of the contest and quickly built a lead. The Falcons went ahead 26-17 on a free throw by Jackson with 7:15 remaining in the first half before the Mariners made a charge. Mitchell tied the game behind a 10-1 run, closing the gap on a lay-up by freshman Michael Pellegrini (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) to make it 27-27 with 5:08 to play.

The Falcons responded with 10 straight points and never looked back. Watson contributed six points during the stretch—all from the foul line—as Albertus Magnus led 37-27 with 1:54 to go. Watson had 13 points in the first half as the Falcons led by seven at the intermission.

After shooting just 27 percent from the floor in the opening half, the Falcons picked things up in the second half and shot 67 percent in the stanza. Albertus Magnus broke the game wide open behind an 18-1 run that left it with a 70-42 lead with 10:58 to play. The Falcons scored on eight straight possessions and shot 7-for-9 from the field during the span, led by seven points from Jackson and six from Watson.

Albertus Magnus held a 50-33 edge on the glass and was led by nine rebounds from Chris Cagle (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse). The Falcons also raced out to a 29-4 advantage in fast break points.

Mitchell will next play at Mount Ida College on Thursday, December 1 at 6 p.m.
