Kim Shadwick: We Salute You!

Coast Guard Academy ends the week with victories in swimming and softball and a baseball split

Swimming: Shadwick Ends Stellar Career with All-America Honors

Senior Kim Shadwick closed out her magnificent career and outstanding week by earning All-America honors for the third time this week, this time in the 1,650 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Tennessee.

Shadwick broke her own school-record with a time of 17:06.01 in the 1,650 freestyle to finish seventh and earn her third All-America honor of the week. The record she broke was one she set at the NCAA Championship last year she placed 10th with a time of 17:09.23.

She was a perfect 3 for 3 this week earning All-America honors in all three races, the 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and finally the 1,650 freestyle, the first three of her career.

On Thursday, Shadwick broke her own school record, set earlier in the day, and earned All-America honors, with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle. She posted a time of 1:50.37 to finish fifth in the preliminaries and earn her a spot in the championship final and All-America status. She broke her own school record of 1:51.66 which she set last season. She swam an even better 1:50.08 to place fourth in the championship final and reset the school record.

It is Shadwick's second All-America performance in as many days as she placed sixth in the 500 freestyle to earn the first All-America honors of her brilliant career on Wednesday.

Softball: Bears Rally to Sweep Wheaton

Junior All-American Hayley Feindel fired a five-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in the opener and her offense backed her up in game two as sophomore Holli Bastinck had a grand slam as Coast Guard, ranked 11th nationally, swept Wheaton 5-0 and 7-6 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Feindel walked three and fanned 12 in the opener and the Bears scored the only run they would need in the first inning on an RBI single by senior All-American catcher Amanda Frederick. Coast Guard scored four more times in the second inning, taking advantage of three Wheaton errors and a pair of hits.

Freshman Allison Baker (6-4) allowed eight hits and just two earned runs while walking two and fanning three in the complete game effort for Wheaton in the opener.

In a wild game two, Bastinck hit a grand slam in the first inning after the first three batters all reached on walked for a 4-0 lead.

Wheaton scored a run in the second on a solo homer by senior Kristen Hunt and added a run in the third on an RBI double by senior Katy Salka to make the score 4-2.

The Lyons erupted for four runs in the fifth as Salka and senior Rachel Merrick had RBI singles to tie the game before sophomore Megan Roy’s two-run single gave the Lyons a 6-4 lead.

In the home half of the fifth, the Bears appeared to tie the game on a two-run homer by sophomore Megan Cook, but she was called out for missing third base and the Bears still trailed 6-5, but a two-out RBI double by Devin Fellman tied the game and she would later score the go ahead run on a wild pitch.

Feindel retired the final six batters in order, three by strikeout, to complete the sweep. She was touched for a season-high six runs, all earned while walking two and striking out 12 to improve to 19-1 on the season.

Junior Lesley Warn (4-4) was the starter and loser for Wheaton. Warn allowed seven hits and seven runs, all earned while walking seven and striking out three.

Salka was 3 for 4 in game two with two RBI’s to lead Wheaton.

Fellman and junior Maddie Buchert each had two hits in the opener for Coast Guard which improved to 19-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Wheaton drops to 10-8 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.

Baseball: Petty Gem Gives Bears Split With Wheaton

Sophomore Derek Petty fired a four-hit shutout, the first shutout of his career, and struck out nine as Coast Guard snapped a ten game losing streak in the series against Wheaton and salvaged a split with a 3-0 win in game two of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader after Wheaton rallied from a 5-0 deficit to win the opener 11-10.

Coast Guard beat Wheaton for the first time since 2007 and the Bears are now 10-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play while the Lyons are 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.

In the opener, Coast Guard scored five runs in the first with five hits and a pair of Wheaton errors. Sophomore Tyler Babkiewich and freshman Dave Wolinski each had RBI singles while sophomore Ed Sella had a two-run single in the inning.

Wheaton erupted for eight runs in the third with junior Dan Haugh’s three-run homer giving the Lyons a 6-5 lead. Sophomore Sean Ryan had a two-run double just before Haugh’s blast to right field.

Coast Guard got two runs in the home half of the third on a two-run single by junior Mike Salerno. The Bears took the lead in the fourth as Wolinski delivered a two-run double before junior Nick Peters added a pinch-hit RBI single for a 10-8 lead.

Wheaton tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by senior Tad Skelley and a sacrifice fly by Ryan.

Haugh broke the 10-10 tie with a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh which proved to be the difference.

Senior Kevin Calabro (1-0) got the win in relief as he worked three innings and allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out four. Freshman Alex Palioca started for Wheaton and allowed 11 hits and ten runs, just four earned. Freshman Ryan Grant got the final two outs with runners on first and second for his third save of the season.

Sophomore Nate Toll was touched for nine earned run in four innings, but classmate Curt Barrett (1-2), who pitched 2 1/3 innings of solid relief was the tough luck loser as he allowed one run.

Petty (1-2) was dominating in the nightcap as the sophomore picked up his first win of the season. He allowed just four singles and walked a batter. He retired 18 of the last 20 batters he faced and did not allow a hit in the final four innings.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Joe Petry scoring Wolinski, who led off the inning with a single, moved to second on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Eric Gerken.

The Bears added a pair of insurance runs, both unearned, in the eighth as sophomore Nolan Gallagher had an RBI single and the Bears added a run with two-outs on a throwing error as Gallagher got in a run down on purpose and a throwing error allowed sophomore Mike Massaro to score from third.

Sophomore Justin Dickinson (0-2) took the loss for Wheaton. He pitched well going 7 2/3 innings allowing seven hits, three runs -- one earned, while walking two and striking out six.

Junior Eddie Kalankiewicz had a game-high three hits in the first game which featured 27 hits, 14 by Wheaton.

Haugh had two hits and four RBI’s while Ryan had a pair of hits and three RBI’s in the game one win for Wheaton.

In game two, senior Graham Sherman and Wolinski each had two hits for Coast Guard.
