Hawks Slay Mariners

Mitchell College men and women lose away games

The Mitchell College women's basketball team lost hold of an early lead and ultimately a game against Becker College on Saturday. The Mitchell men also lost a basketball game to the Hawks. The following information was provided by Matt Tittle, sports information director at Becker College.

Men's Basketball: Becker 85, Mitchell 50

Becker College finished the regular season a perfect 14-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference after defeating Mitchell College 85-50 in men’s basketball action on Saturday.

Senior Trae Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD.) carried the Hawks with a game high 20 points. Junior Terrance Favors (Boston, Mass.) had 16 points and Rajai Leggett (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in with 12 points. Freshman Tyler Robinson (Irvington, N.J.) scored 10 points off the bench.

With the win Becker improves to 22-3. The Hawks will host the New England Collegiate Conference Final Four beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.

Chris Thomas (Orlando, Fla.) came off the bench for Mitchell and scored a team high 13 points in the loss. Mitchell finishes the season with a record of 1-22 overall and 0-14 in the NECC.

Women's Basketball: Becker 62, Mitchell 60

In a must win situation Becker College defeated Mitchell College 62-60, earning a spot in the New England Collegiate Conference women’s basketball playoffs.

Becker led by as much as eight early in the first half before the Mariners went on an 18-3 run. The two teams exchanged the lead on three different occasions before Mitchell took a 31-24 advantage at the half.

Senior Alix O’Neil (New London, Conn.) opened the second half with a layup, giving Mitchell what proved to be their largest lead of the game 33-24. Becker slowly chipped away. With 14:48 remaining in the game Kaylee Cerruto (Torrington, Conn.) nailed a three pointer putting Mitchell in front 43-35. Becker responded by going on a 8-0 run, tying the game at 43-43 with 10:01 remaining.  Freshman Chelsea Joubert (Westborough, Mass.) hit a three pointer with 7:33 on the clock giving Becker a 48-45 advantage. The teams went back and forth with the lead two more times before the reining NECC Rookie of the Week Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) put back teammate Heidi Miller’s (Sanbornton, N.H.) missed jumper, placing the Lady Hawks in front 52-50.  With Becker clinging to a 61-60 lead with 18 seconds remaining, Kristina Desnoyers (Adams, Mass.) fought through a crowd of Mariners to pull down what proved to be a game winning rebound.

Allison Peck (Colchester, Conn.) scored a game high 16 points for the Mariners in the loss. Alix O’Neil fished with 14 points and 11 rebounds to earn a double-double.  Junior Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points. The Mariners finished the regular season with a record of 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the NECC.

Chelsea Joubert led the Lady Hawks with 15 points and Tatiana Mojica added 13 in the win. Freshman Haley Ooms (Valatie, N.Y.) had 11 assists as Becker improved to 10-14 overall and 8-8 in the NECC. Becker will travel to Newbury College on Tuesday evening for the first round of the NECC tournament.
