America’s Privateer Lynx arrives Wednesday, September 26th to Mark War of 1812 200th anniversary

New London, CT – America’s Privateer Lynx, a faithful interpretation of a 19th Century Square Top-Sail Schooner which helped defend a young United States in the War of 1812, will sail into New London, CT Wednesday, September 26 as part of New London’s “Best BBQ Chef Competition-State Championship” Event.

The celebrated War of 1812 privateer square top sail schooner has arrived on the East Coast from Hawai’i & California and is scheduled for a five-year mission along the East Coast of the United States, the Great Lakes and Canada, where she will be participating  in the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. 

The 122-foot square top sail schooner Privateer Lynx with its eight-member crew in period dress will fire a salute from her main battery of six-pounder carronade deck guns upon her grand entrance scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the docks at New London Waterfront Park.  Following its grand entrance The Lynx will be available for public tours as well as exciting sailing excursions around the New London waterfront. Lynx is one of a few Tall Ships to offer the chance to actually experience the ship’s deck guns roar while under sail. Climb aboard and step back in time as you relive history and feel the adventure.

   “All law-abiding and loyal citizens are urged to be vigilant and alert to the presence on your waterfront of the weatherly, fast, and heavily-armed Clipper Schooner Lynx,” said Jeffrey Woods, executive director of the Lynx Education Foundation which operates the living history sailing museum. “We are very excited to visit New London and celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.”

On decks and below Lynx evokes the life, spirit, and atmosphere of a vanished age of sail.

  Lynx is an interpretation of an actual privateer named Lynx built by Thomas Kemp in 1812 in Fell's Point, Maryland. She was among the first ships to defend American freedom by evading the British naval fleet and then blockading American ports and serving in the important privateering efforts. Although captured early in the war, the original Lynx design was recognized as superior. With her rakish profile and superior sailing abilities, she served as an inspiration to those ships that would follow.

   Naval architects continue to study her power and grace. Built in Rockport, Maine, the reproduction Lynx was commissioned in 2001. She is fitted with period ordnance and flies pennants and flags from the 1812 era and serves as a sailing classroom.

  “With a noble mission, Lynx acts as a dynamic educational platform and provides a unique opportunity for students and adults to interact with their American History lessons and renders a hands-on experience like no other,” Woods said. “Students and adults recognize the War of 1812 as a significant element of American heritage and as a turning point in the development of our national identity.”
