Engineers Dismantle Bears in Swim Meet

MIT defeats men's and women's teams

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology defeated the Coast Guard Academy in a swimming tri-meet in Cambridge, Mass. on Sunday, resulting in the first loss of the season for the Bears. The Coast Guard swimmers held on to a win against Springfield College. MIT, along with Springfield, also defeated the women's team. The following information was provided by the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department:

Men's Swimming

Nick Poehler won the 1,000 freestyle and Johnson Knox had three second place finishes as Coast Guard split a tri-meet with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) powerhouses.

Coast Guard beat Springfield 224-76 while MIT, ranked fifth nationally, handed the Bears their first loss of the season 195-103.

Poehler won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:55.63 while Marco Tinari took second in the event with a time of 9:57.63.

Johnson Knox took second in the 50 freestyle (21.78) and was part of both the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay which finished second.

Knox teamed with Bryan Adams, Matt Odom and Dan Alley in the 200 medley relay and posted a time of 1:38.09 while Knox, Brian McGuiness, Alley and Dan Beshoar placed second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.68.

Also for the Bears, Mike Carman took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.24) and Kevin Smit was second in the 500 freestyle (4:47.25

Coast Guard is now 6-1 in dual meets this season.

Women's Swimming

Kim Shadwick won a pair of events, but Coast Guard lost a tri-meet at MIT.

Host MIT beat the Bears 215-85 while Springfield beat Coast Guard 184.5-115.5.

Shadwick won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:16.22 and the 1,000 freestyle event with a time of 10:49.03.

Chantel Ferguson took second place in the 100 butterfly for Bears with a time of 1:01.36

Coast Guard drops to 2-5 in dual meets this season.
