Corsairs Put Camels On Ice

Connecticut College kept up heavy fire on the UMass-Dartmouth team's goal in a men's ice hockey game on Saturday, outshooting the Corsairs by a two-to-one margin, but were unable to put enough in the net for the win. UMass-Dartmouth defeated the Camels 6-4 at their home rink. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alberta) collected 29 of his 36 saves over the final two periods of play to lead the UMass-Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 6-4 victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The Corsairs improve to 3-2-1 with the win, while the Camels fall to 1-2 with the setback.

Dave McDonald (Wakefield, Mass.), Rob Dudley (Douglas, Mass.) and Mike Owens (South Boston, Mass.) all finished with a goal and an assist for the visitors.

Connecticut College sophomore forward Keith Veronesi (South Glastonbury, Conn.) tallied two scores for the hosts. Marc Roper (Moncton, New Brunswick) chipped in with a goal and an assist while Sean Curran (Wilmette, Ill.) dished out two assists in the setback for the Camels.

Senior net-minder Andrew Margolin (Mahwah, N.J.) finished with 14 saves for the Camels.

The visitors took their first lead with 12:18 remaining in regulation. Dudley won a face-off to Stephen Ginand (Milford, Mass.) who potted the go-ahead score for the Corsairs from the high slot.

The Camels responded though. Veronesi took a lead pass from J.J. McGregor (Wichita, Kan.) and broke free down the right side in a 1-on-1 situation for his second goal of the night.

But McDonald put the visitors on top for good with 3:06 remaining, sneaking in a low shot on the power play to make it a 5-4 game. Owens added an empty-netter with 59 seconds left and the visitors were able to hold on for the 6-4 victory.

The Camels out-shot the Corsairs 18-to-5 in the middle period but the visitors accounted for the only goal in the frame to event the score at three.

Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, Mass.) buried a one-timer in the slot with assists coming from Dan Dempsey (Norwell, Mass.) and McDonald at 10:58 of the second period.

The Corsairs got on the board 2:46 into the contest. Phil Bronner (Wilbraham, Mass.) fired a shot from inside the right circle that was saved by Margolin. However, senior Mike Owens collected the rebound and fed classmate Rob Dudley for a score from point blank range.

But the Camels responded by scoring the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Will Einstein (New Canaan, Conn.) scored the equalizer at 7:45 on a nifty looking 2-on-1. Zach Jones (Gibsonia, Pa.) was able to freeze the goalie at the near post side of the goal and connect with Einstein for the backhander in the slot.

With 10:56 remaining in the first, the Camels cashed in on a power play. Marc Roper (Moncton, New Brunswick) went top shelf with a shot from the top of the right circle. Kevin Reich (Montvale, N.J.) and Sean Curran assisted on the power play marker.

The Corsairs evened things up at two when Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) scored with 7:17 remaining in the first. But the Camels closed out the period with another power play goal to take a 3-2 lead after one. Keith Veronesi tipped one in from the slot and was assisted by Roper and Curran.

Connecticut College out-shot the visitors 40-to-20 in the game and held a 30-to-11 shot advantage in the final two periods of regulation.
