Camels win women's basketball game, lose men's basketball and hockey competitions

The Connecticut College women's basketball team surged past Trinity College on Friday, while the men's basketball team and women's ice hockey team couldn't overcome their competitors. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Women's Basketball: Conn College 65, Trinity 56

Tara Gabelman (Irivington, N.Y.) exploded with 17 points and 14 rebounds to help lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to their seventh straight victory, a 65-56 triumph at Trinity College in the NESCAC opener for both sides.

Connecticut College improves to 10-1, while the hosts fall to 5-6 with the setback.

The Camels trailed 28-24 at the half and were down by as many as six in the second stanza. But the visitors put together an 11-0 run in the latter stages of the second stanza to pull away from the Bantams.

Junior captain Kacie Quick (Winchester, Mass.) buried a three-ball to ignite the Camels on their run with 6:49 remaining and Caitlin Cimino (Falmouth, Maine) netted two of her 14 points to cap the rally and make it a 54-47 game with 4:02 to play.

Cimino was a scorching 6-for-9 from the field en route to her 14 point effort and added four rebounds and three blocked shots. Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) and Jenn Shinall (Redding, Conn.) netted 13 points each for the winning side.

Smith dished out a game-high six assists and was 6-for-11 from the floor. Shinall was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line and finished with four steals for the Camels.

It was the seventh double-double of the season for Gabelman, who played 39 of 40 minutes Friday night.

The Camels out-shot the Bantams 18-to-7 at the foul line and were 12-for-13 from the charity stripe in the second half of play.

Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, Conn.) finished with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Trinity College. Junior guard Carly Napier (Pittsford, N.Y.) added 12 points for the Bantams.

Taylor Murtaugh (New York, N.Y.) finished with nine points while Michelle Royals (Torrington, Conn.) added eight points and five rebounds in the setback.

The Camels will visit Amherst College today for a 2:00 p.m. game in Western Mass.

Trinity will host intra-state rival Wesleyan University for a 2:00 p.m. game in Hartford, Conn.

Men's Basketball: Trinity 70, Conn College 53

The Trinity College men's basketball team earned its fourth straight win, a 70-53 victory against Connecticut College in the NESCAC opener for both sides.

Mick DiStasio (Yarmouth, Maine) poured in a game-high 13 points with four steals to lead the Bantams. Freshmen Carter Trent (Little Rock, Ark.) and George Papadeas (Athens, Greece) chipped in with 12 points each for the hosts.

After falling behind 47-25 at the break, the Camels were able to out-score the Bantams 28-to-23 in the second half.

Matt Vadas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.), the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Connecticut College. Mason Lopez (Hoboken, N.J.) added nine points in a 4-for-5 shooting performance for the Camels.

Boris Jeremic (Rijeka, Croatia) and Tyrone Turner (New York, N.Y.) netted seven points each for the visitors.

The Camels will visit Amherst College today for a 4:00 p.m. game in Western Mass.

Women's Ice Hockey: Bowdoin 3, Conn College 2

Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.) stopped 34 of 36 shots to lead the Bowdoin College women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Connecticut College in a re-match of a 2011 NESCAC Championship Quarterfinal match up played at Dayton Arena Friday.

The Polar Bears improve to 4-3-2 and 2-1 in the NESCAC with their third straight win, while the Camels fall to 3-5-1 with a 1-4 record in league action.

Sophomore Madeline Lane (Topsham, Maine) and Stephanie Ludy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) both had a goal and an assist to lead the Polar Bear offense. Kim Tess-Wanat (Fond-du Lac, Wis.) potted her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the visitors.

Sophomore Andrea McRae (Stittsville, Ontario) scored her second of the season for the Camels and classmate Olivia Farrell (New York, N.Y.) chipped in with her third goal and the 27th point of her career.

Junior net-minder Amy Leichliter (West Chester, Pa.) made 23 saves for the hosts.

Connecticut College out-shot the visitors 36-to-26 in the contest.

Lane put the Polar Bears on top for good with a shot from the right point at the 3:12 mark of the second period. Emily Tang (Cambridge, Mass.) and Ludy assisted on the power -play marker.

In the third period, Ludy added an insurance marker with 6:39 to play. Shelagh Merrill and Lane assisted on the score that proved to be the difference in the contest.

Farrell got one back for the Camels with 61 seconds left. Courtney Dumont (Lewiston, Maine) and Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) assisted with the Camel goal empty.

But the Polar Bears were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

The two teams will meet again today for a 3:00 p.m. game at Dayton Arena.
