Williams routs Camels in Sunday games

Visiting teams from Williams College earned three victories against Connecticut College on Sunday, as the Camels were unable to score a goal against the Ephs in any of the competitions. Men's Soccer: Williams 1, Conn College 0

Phillip Vestergaard (St. Petersburg, Fla.) chipped in a penalty kick in the 63rd minute of action to lift the Williams College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Connecticut College Sunday.

The Ephs improve to 6-3-2 with a 4-2-2 record in the NESCAC, while the Camels fall to 7-4-1 with a 4-4-1 record in conference action.

Junior net-minder Than Finan (Williamstown, Mass.) made a game-saving stop on a Camel penalty kick in the 74th minute of play and finished with saves in the shutout.

Connecticut College sophomore Casey Marini (Hampden, Mass.) had one stop in the loss for the hosts.

The Camels had their chances in this game. With 26:20 remaining in the first half, Billy Hawkey (Hopewell, N.J.) planted a header off a corner kick from Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, Conn.) but Finan was able to make the stop at the near post.

Later on with 33 minutes left, Kevin O'Brien (Welllesley, Mass.) unloaded from 20 yards out but his blast caromed off the post and sailed out of play.

Williams held a slim 13-to-10 advantage in shots while the Camels held a 7-to-3 edge in corner kicks.

Connecticut College will host the Coast Guard next Saturday for a noon-time matchup with the Coast Guard.

The Ephs will host Colby College next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. tilt in Williamstown, Mass.

 

Women's Soccer: Williams 2, Conn College 0

The Williams College women's soccer team posted its third straight win in a 2-0 victory at Connecticut College Sunday.

The Ephs, ranked #14 in the nation, improve to 9-2-1 with a 6-1-1 record in the NESCAC. The Camels slip to 4-7-1 with a 1-6-1 record in conference play.

Brett Eisenhart (Seattle, Wash.) netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 28th minute of action and Lilly Wellenbach (West Bath, Maine) added an insurance marker with 1:41 remaining in regulation.

Junior net-minder Laura Wann (Palos Verdes, Calif.) made one save in the shutout for the visitors. Natalie Signor (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with six saves in the contest for the Camels.

Senior Jill Cote (Portsmouth, R.I.) impressed the Connecticut College coaching staff with a strong effort in the midfield. Overall, the Camels put forth a much stronger effort than their performance in Saturday's home loss to Bates.

Williams will host Colby College next Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. game in Williamstown, Mass.

The Camels will host Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. game in New London, Conn.

 

Field Hockey: Williams 3, Conn College 0

The Williams College field hockey team earned a 3-0 NESCAC victory at Connecticut College Sunday afternoon.

The Ephs improve to 5-6 with a 2-5 record in the NESCAC, while the Camels fall to 6-6 with a 2-6 mark in league play.

First year forward Katie Jolin (Guilford, Conn.) tallied a goal and an assist for the winning side.

Betsy Hart (New Canaan, Conn.) and Caitlin Conlon (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in with score for the visitors. Emily Jablonski (Madison, Conn.) dished out two assists in the triumph.

Sophomore net-minder Ariana Spiliotes (Bethesda, Md.) had six saves in the shutout for the visitors.

Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) finished with seven saves in the setback for the hosts.

Hart put the visitors on the board with 8:57 remaining in the opening half, finishing in a 3-on-1 situation from close range. Conlon added an insurance marker 4:32 in the second stanza and the Ephs added a third goal to close out the 3-0 victory.

Connecticut College junior Kelsey Nickerson (Weston, Mass.) contributed a defensive save in the loss.

The Camels continue to get strong defensive play from seniors Kelly Watkns (San Jose, Calif.) and Liz Rosenfeld (Leola, Pa.).

Both teams will continue to scramble for one of the final spots in the 2011 NESCAC Championship Tournament. Williams will return home to host Hamilton College Wednesday night for a 6:00 p.m. conference tilt in Williamstown.

The Camels will host intra-state rival Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. game in New London.
