Camels win lacrosse, tennis games

The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team defeated Amherst College on Tuesday, while Drew University squeaked past the women's team. The Camels also defeated the Coast Guard Academy in a men's tennis competition. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Lacrosse: Conn College 5, Amherst 4

Senior Rob Moccia (Malvern, Pa.) stopped nine shots and the Camel defensive unit stood tall as Connecticut College knocked off Amherst College 5-4 in a NESCAC game played on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Tuesday.

The Camels frustrated a diversified and talented Amherst offense that was averaging 10.25 goals per game.

Connecticut College improves its record to 7-5 with a 4-4 mark in the NESCAC. The Lord Jeffs are 8-5 with a 4-4 record in conference play.

Senior Clay Hillyer (South Windsor, Conn.), Brogan O'Connor (Haverhill, Mass.) and Mike Brennan (Chester Springs, Pa.) contributed to the victory as starting close defenders.

Chuck Czerkawski (Cohasset, Mass.) won 9-of-12 face-offs, while classmate Michael O'Donnell (Winchester, Mass.) corralled a team-best four ground balls in the triumph.

Junior Andrew Freedman (Sudbury, Mass.) scored twice and accounted for the eventual game-winner with 6:39 remaining in regulation. John Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) netted his team-leading 21st goal of the season to go with an assist, while sophomore JR Hartgers (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) contributed with goal #16 and assist #11 to raise his season's offensive output to 27 points.

Amherst College senior midfielder Alex Fox (Garden City, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals in the setback for the visitors. Devin Acton (Sudbury, Mass.) netted his 30th goal of the season and added an assist. Acton leads the Lord Jeffs with 39 points.

Danny Gold (Medfield, Mass.) had five ground balls and Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, N.Y.) registered three ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers in the loss.

Senior net-minder Samuel Jakimo (Woodbury, N.Y.) made six saves in the cage for the visitors.

The Camels took a 2-1 lead after one. In the second quarter, Stephen Eicher (Northport, N.Y.) rifled one home from the right side of the box with 7:16 to go and the Camels carried the 3-1 advantage into the break.

With 9:31 remaining in the third, Moccia made a terrific save on a bounce shot from Fox to protect to the two goal lead. However, with 6:59 to go the Lord Jeffs pulled to within a goal when Evan Redwood (Lutherville, Md.) assisted Acton for a score.

The Camels regained their two goal edge when Hartgers assisted Lyons for a score with a pass from behind the cage at 4:52. But Amherst closed out the third quarter scoring with 29.2 seconds left when Fox put in an unassisted marker.

In the fourth quarter, the Camels took a 5-3 lead when Freedman scored on an assisting pass from Lyons with 6:39 remaining.

But the Lord Jeffs would not go away and with 3:53 to play in regulation, Aaron Mathias (Ridgefield, Conn.) elevated for a jump shot from the top of the box to make it a 5-4 contest.

But Moccia and the Camel defense slammed the door tight after that and the hosts were able to hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Amherst out-shot the Camels 43-to-26 in the contest and held a 25-to-15 edge in ground balls.

Both teams will play their next games Saturday at 1. Amherst host its long-standing rival Williams for a 1:00 p.m. game while the Camels head north to take on Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Women's Lacrosse: Drew 15, Conn College 14

Jess Johnson (Gilbertsville, Pa.) scored 1:49 into the third overtime to lift Drew University to a 15-14 victory against visiting Connecticut College.

The Rangers evened their record at 7-7 with the triumph, while the Camels fell to 5-9 with the setback.

Aileen Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists to lead the hosts. Rookie attackwoman Nikki Kleiman (Cranford, N.J.) chipped in with four goals and an assist while Lyndsay Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) added three goals with one assist and a game-high six ground balls for the winning side.

Lindsay Fry (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) collected five draws to go with two scores for Drew.

Christian Carlini (Amherst, N.H.) stopped 13 shots in goal for the hosts.

Connecticut College senior Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) scored six goals to go along with six draws, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Izzy Marx (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipped in with three goals and a game-best eight draw controls while playing in her home state.

Charlotte McAuley (Summit, N.J.) contributed with two scores and three draw controls. Heidi Halsted (Mill Valley, Calif.) added a goal and an assist for Connecticut College.

Kelsey Burke (Atlanta, Ga.) made six saves in the setback for the Camels.

Camel Tracks-Not Including Tuesday's Action:

The Camels went 1-2 last week, earning a 12-11 victory against Eastern Connecticut State Thursday night for the team's fifth win of the season. Sophomore Lowell Abbott (Manchester, Mass.) is ranked third in NESCAC goals scored with 34 marker and has added six assists to rank fifth in the league with 40 points.

Junior Katelyn Driscoll (Peabody, Mass.) reached the century mark with her 100th goal scored in a 19-12 loss to Hamilton Saturday. Driscoll's career totals include 34 assists to go with her 100 markers for 134 points. She has corralled 127 ground balls, won 106 draws and caused 63 turnovers. This season, Driscoll has netted 25 goals to go with 10 helpers to rank 10th in the league with 35 points. Driscoll leads the league with 38 ground balls and ranks third in the NESCAC with 42 draw controls.

Junior net-minder Kelsey Burke (Atlanta, Ga.) is leading the NESCAC with 92 saves and ranks fourth in the league with 7.08 saves per game.

Men's Tennis: Conn College 6, Coast Guard 3

The Connecticut College men's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory against the Coast Guard in a match-up of neighborhood rivals played on the South Tennis Courts Tuesday.

The Camels even their record at 6-6 with the triumph, while the Bears fall to 9-4 with the setback.

Freshman Joshua Suneby (Wellesley, Mass.) rallied to take a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory at #2 singles. JC Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) earned a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at #3. Will Tucker (London, United Kingdom) and Huan Nguyen (Pleasantville, N.Y.) prevailed in their respective slot at fifth and sixth singles for Head Coach Chris O'Brien's squad.

In doubles action, Cangelosi and George King (Concord, Mass.) posted an 8-6 win at #1 doubles.

Coast Guard senior Greg Mitchell (Keene, N.H.) earned a 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 victory at first singles. Blake Maurer (Fort Worth, Tex.) chipped in with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph at #4.

Maurer and Josh Fischer (Roanoke, Tex.) earned a 9-8 victory at #2 doubles for the Bears.
