Camels win two soccer games, one with an overtime point

Connecticut College won two home soccer games against Bowdoin College on Saturday, while the Polar Bears took a field hockey victory home to Maine. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's College: Conn College 1, Bowdoin 0

Kevin O'Brien (Wellesley, Mass.) scored in the 68th minute of action and sophomore keeper Casey Marini (Hampden, Mass.) posted a shutout with six saves as Connecticut College earned a 1-0 NESCAC victory against Bowdoin College in front of 300 fans at Tempel Green Saturday.

Senior defenders Andrew Lee (Darien, Conn.) and Mike Crosby (Sudbury, Mass.) assisted on the difference making goal.

Oscar Brown (Ridgefield, Conn.) played a critical role in killing clock in the closing minutes and drew a critical foul with two minutes left that allowed the Camels to keep the ball on the offensive side of the field.

Bowdoin College sophomore Will Wise (Cohasset, Mass.) finished with two saves in the setback. First year forward Sam White (Falmouth, Maine) led the visitors offensively with four shots in the contest.

Marini was pleased with the entire team's effort and is looking forward to an exciting month of Camel soccer in October.

"This was a complete effort for us today," Marini said. "We talked about handling set pieces as a unit and we did that effectively. We're confident with what we're doing here and we expect to get results. I'm very comfortable with the play of our back four and they are very confident in my ability to handle the goaltending."

Women's Soccer: Conn College 2, Bowdoin 1

First year keeper Natalie Signor (Glastonbury, Conn.) made seven saves and Grace Bilodeau (Harvard, Mass.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season as Connecticut College walked off with thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Bowdoin College on Tempel Green Saturday.

Ellery Gould (Sandwich, Mass.) scored her sixth goal of the season for Bowdoin. It was the 38th marker of her prolific career, tying the program record held by Marte Holden '85.

Sophomore Louise Johnson (New York, N.Y.) logged a complete game in goal for the Polar Bears.

The Camels opened the scoring in the 18th minute of action. Ali McKeigue (Arlington, Mass.) assisted Bilodeau for the goal and the Camels were able to carry the one goal lead into the break.

But in the 84th minute of action, Gould scored the equalizer for Bowdoin on a rebounded shot.

In the extra session, Connecticut College gained the Bowdoin defensive zone and was set up with a corner kick. A Polar Bear defender inadvertently headed the ball into the goal and the hosts celebrated with the 2-1 victory.

After the game, senior defender Jacqui Durand (Sudbury, Mass.) commented on the importance of getting the NESCAC win and extending the teams' unbeaten streak to three games.

"I think we're getting stronger and stronger every game," Durand said. "There's a huge difference in our play and our confidence is building as the season progresses."

Field Hockey: Bowdoin 4, Conn College 1

Cathleen Smith (Larchmont, N.Y.) scored a pair of first half goals to lead the second ranked Bowdoin College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The defending NCAA Division III Champions improve to 6-0 with a 4-0 mark in the NESCAC. The Camels drop to 4-3 with a 1-3 record in the league.

Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass.) chipped in with three assists for the winning side. Elizabeth Clegg (Hudson, Ohio) and Katie Riley (Hingham, Mass.) chipped in with scores for the Polar Bears.

Junior net-minder Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) made five saves in the victory.

Connecticut College junior Brittany Fitzgerald (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season for the hosts. Emily Scribner (White River Jct., Vt.) and Liz Rosenfeld (Leola, Pa.) assisted on the goal.

Connecticut College rookie net-minder Becca Napolitano (Hamden, Conn.) finished with 14 saves in the contest.

Volleyball

The Connecticut College volleyball team headed north for NESCAC volleyball action at Bowdoin College this weekend. The Camels took two out of three matches, improving to 4-1 in league play and 11-4 overall.

Friday night, the Camels blanked Colby in a 3-0 win. The game scores were 25-17, 26-24 and 25-12 in favor of Connecticut College.

Junior Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) buried 15 kills and added three blocks with just one error on 29 attempts for an impressive .480 hitting percentage.

Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) finished with 22 assists in the triumph.

The Camels dropped a 3-1 decision to Bowdoin Saturday. The game scores were 19-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 14-25.

Schroff recorded a double-double with 12 kills, 10 digs and one ace. Bianca Smith (San Jose, Calif.) chipped in with 11 kills and two aces. Ketcham dished out 24 assists in the setback.

In the final match of the weekend, the Camels tamed the Bobcats of Bates in a 3-0 triumph. The game scores were 25-17, 25-19 and 25-19.

Schroff erupted with 18 kills, four digs and one block in the win. Georgia Naumann (Medfield, Mass.) checked in with six kills for the winning side.

Carly Guiducci (Del Mar, Calif.) had 13 digs in the win. Senior Ally Terlizzi (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) added 10 digs and Ketcham distributed 25 helpers.
