Camels compete with Hamilton College in several sports

Connecticut College took on Hamilton College in numerous competitions on Saturday, with each school taking home some victories. The colleges split soccer wins, with the Camels shutting out the Continentals in volleyball and the Continentals doing likewise to the Camels in field hockey. Connecticut College's cross country teams also took part in a pair of meets. The following information was provided by William Tomasian, sports information director at Connecticut College:

Men's Soccer: Conn College 1, Hamilton 0

Billy Hawkey '14 scored the game's lone goal and Casey Marini '14 stopped all six shots he faced to lead Connecticut College to a 1-0 win against Hamilton College in a NESCAC men's soccer game at Hamilton's Love Field on Sept. 17.

Conn. College (3-0-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) remained unbeaten and unscored upon through the first three games of 2011. Today's contest was the first between these two programs.

The Camels held a 7-2 shot advantage and took six corner kicks in the first half, but there was no score at the break. Conn. College didn't waste any time getting on the board in the second half.

Oscar Brown '12 stole an errant pass deep in the Continentals' defensive side, dribbled into the 18-yard box and slotted a pass across to Hawkey, who was alone in front of the goalkeeper. Hawkey buried the shot for his team-leading third goal in the 48th minute.

Eric Boole '13 made four saves for Hamilton, which was shut out for the second straight game. The Continentals dropped to 0-2-1 overall and in the NESCAC.

The Camels owned a 13-8 shot advantage, and took eight corner kicks to Hamilton's four. Conn. College had a chance to seal the victory late in the second half, but a shot on a breakaway opportunity hit the left post.

Hamilton travels to SUNY Institute of Technology for a non-conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Camels host Wesleyan University in NESCAC action on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Women's Soccer: Hamilton 2, Conn College 0

Emily Grund '15 posted one goal and one assist to lead Hamilton College to a 2-0 win against Connecticut College in a NESCAC women's soccer game at Hamilton's Love Field on Sept. 17.

Grund recorded the first three points of her collegiate career. Liza Gergenti '14 stopped all three shots she faced for her fifth career shutout with the Continentals. Alex Rimmer '13 scored her third goal this year and her 26th at Hamilton. Emi Birch '14 was credited with her second assist of 2011.

Amy Lowitt '13 made nine saves for Conn. College. The Camels haven't scored in two games this year. The two teams were playing each other for the first time.

Hamilton (2-2-0 overall, 1-1 NESCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. The ball was served from the corner to Rimmer, who one-touched a shot that ripped the back of the net. The Continentals led 1-0 at the break as they held a commanding 8-1 shot advantage.

Conn. College (0-2-0, 0-2) kept it a one-goal game until just 86 seconds remained in the second half. The Continentals were awarded a free kick, which tipped off Lowitt's glove and bounced away from the keeper. Grund got to the loose ball first and scored her first goal.

Hamilton enjoyed a 15-6 shot advantage, and took four corner kicks to two for the Camels. The Continentals are 11-0-1 in their last 12 home games.

Hamilton travels to Utica College for a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 18. Conn. College hosts University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Field Hockey: Hamilton 2, Conn College 0

Caitlin Livsey '12 broke a tie with her first goal this year midway through the second half, and Hamilton College held on for a 2-1 win against Connecticut College in a NESCAC field hockey game at Hamilton's Campus Road Athletic Field on Sept. 17.

Mary Lancaster '12 scored her second goal in as many games for the Continentals, who have played 39 straight contests without being shut out. Victoria Trentini '15 made four saves, and Catie Torcivia '12 was credited with a defensive save.

Hanna Wagner '12 scored Connecticut College's goal, and Brittany Fitzgerald '13 picked up her third assist this year. Becca Napolitano '15 turned away four shots.

Hamilton (2-1 overall, 1-1 NESCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead 9 minutes, 51 seconds into the first half. Sarah Flisnik '12 took a shot from the left wing that was blocked, and the ball eventually bounced over to Lancaster, who pounced on the rebound from close range. The goal was the 17th of Lancaster's collegiate career.

The Camels (3-1, 1-1) tied the score following a penalty corner with no time left in the first half. Fitzgerald, who earlier had started the play, fired the ball towards the right post. Wagner was there to redirect the ball into the back of the cage.

Livsey provided the game-winner with 18:34 left. She gained possession of a loose ball outside the arc and dribbled in from the right wing. With a defender draped on her left shoulder, Livsey laced a shot that eluded Napolitano, who had charged off her line to try and stop the breakaway opportunity. The goal was Livsey's sixth for the Continentals.

Both teams took 14 shots and both were awarded nine penalty corners. This game marked the first meeting between the teams.

Hamilton hosts Amherst College for another conference game on Saturday, Sept. 24. Connecticut College returns home to play Trinity in NESCAC action on Saturday as well.

Volleyball: Conn College 3, Hamilton 0

The Connecticut College Camels secured a 3-0 shutout victory against visiting Hamilton College in a NESCAC match played at Luce Field House Saturday. The game scores were 25-19, 25-20 and 25-15 in favor of the hosts.

The Camels improve to 5-2 with a perfect 2-0 mark in the NESCAC, while the Continentals fall to 7-4 with a 0-2 mark in league play.

Connecticut College senior Amy Newman (Los Angeles, Calif.) buried 20 kills with just three errors to go along with six digs for the hosts. Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) chipped in with eight kills for the winning side.

Melissa Kohl (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) added five kills and four digs in the triumph. Junior setter Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) dished out a match-high 37 assists in the win.

Connecticut College head volleyball coach Josh Edmed was pleased with the weekend sweep and is looking ahead to next week's action at MIT.

"Overall it was a solid weekend for us," Edmed said. "We progressed from where we were last week. We know have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be next weekend."

The Camels will visit the Bay State for the first rounds of the MIT Invitational this Friday, Sept. 23.

Men's Cross Country

The Connecticut College men's cross country team opened their season in the Big Apple with the 17th Annual Meet of Champions, hosted by Iona College at Van Cortlandt Park. The Camels were the only Division III team in the field but turned in a respectable 12th place finish in the deeply talented 19 team field of competitors with a score of 337 points.

The Gaels of Iona College, who are ranked #4 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Poll, won the meet with a score of 19 points. Leonard Korir of Iona was the individual champion and posted a time of 24:27 on the 8k course, unofficially the eighth fastest recorded time in course history.

Connecticut College sophomore Mike LeDuc (Canton, N.Y.) and senior Doug Wright (Darien, Conn.) paced the Camels with 45th and 48th place finishes in respective times of 26:32 and 26:34. Freshman Alex Mavrovic (Thetford Mines, Quebec) posted a time of 27:12 en route to an 89th place finish. Junior Tim Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) was the 93rd finisher in 27:15.

Andrew Duarte (Rocky Hill, Conn.) checked in with a time of 27:19 in 101st place. Mike Joyce (Wallingford, Conn.) was the sixth Camel finisher in 160th place with a time of 28:22. Freshman Patrick Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) posted a time of 28:30 as the seventh Camel finisher in 168th place.

Members of the Connecticut College men's cross country team visited the Bay State to compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational.

Senior Brenner Green (Lisbon, Conn.) paced the Camels with a 79th place finish in 26:59 on the 8k course. The Camels placed 17th out of 41 teams with a score of 489 points. MIT won the invitational with a winning score of 26 points.

Senior Colin Gallant (Ashford, Conn.) posted a time of 27:22 to finish in 97th place. Junior Matt Boudreau (Bridgewater, Mass.) was the 116th finisher with a time of 27:39. Sophomore Aaron Davis (New London, Conn.) checked in with a time of 27:39 in 117th place.

Dan Post (Pepper Pike, Ohio) was the 135th finisher in 27:58. Junior Matt Gitkind (Westborough, Mass.) registered a time of 29:08 in 172nd place. Senior Hoitt McAllister (McLean, Va.) was the seventh Camel finisher in 199th place with a time of 30:05.

The Camels placed ninth in the sub-varsity race with 272 points. Patrick Myers (South Burlington, Vt.) posted a time of 28:56 en route to a 52nd place showing for Connecticut College.

Women's Cross Country

The Connecticut College women's cross country team scored 314 points to place 10th in the 40 team field at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational Saturday. MIT won the invitational with a score of 25 points.

Senior Lindsay Paiva (Coventry, R.I.) paced the Camels with a 32nd place finish in 19:34 on the 5k course. Kerry Dermody (Erieville, N.Y.) posted a time of 19:42 en route to a 37th place finish. Ally Bonito (Guilford, Conn.) was the 71st runner to the finish line in 20:21.

Senior Libby Maret (Sandy Hook, Conn.) was the fourth Camel in 90th place overall with a time of 20:32. Michelle Wesley (Millwood, N.Y.) checked in with a time of 20:34 in 94th place. Nicky Jasbon (Greenacres, Fla.) was the 99th finisher in 20:37.

Senior Anne Kearney (Westbrook, Conn.) posted a time of 20:53 to finish 117th in the field and Lianne Swanson (Franklin, Mass.) was the 125th finisher in 20:58.

In the sub-varsity race, the Camels finished eighth with 201 points. Heather Rochford (Red Bank, N.J.) posted a time of 21:33 to lead the Camels in 35th place.
